Marie Dorothy Honerkamp, 97, died peacefully on Wednesday, April 25, 2018, at her residence in Piedmont.

Marie was born on March 18, 1921, in Wellston, Missouri. She married John Honerkamp in 1948 and moved from St. Louis to Piedmont, SD. They had eight children together, and as a family they built and operated the Covered Wagon Resort in Piedmont.

At the Resort's zenith, husband John (age 43 at the time) was injured in a construction accident that left him a quadriplegic for the rest of his life. When he was released from the V.A hospital a year after the accident, Marie became John's fulltime caregiver, and together they continued to operate the Covered Wagon Resort for the next 10 years. In 1973, they sold the Resort and built a home north of Piedmont. They were very involved in researching and recording local history, and they were active in the Catholic Church, Piedmont Cemetery Association, Volunteer Fire Dept., and many other community organizations and projects. Throughout the years, Marie never wavered in serving as John's constant companion and caregiver until his death at age 93.

Marie is preceded in death by six of her siblings, her first husband William Derrick, her second husband John, her son Bill, and her granddaughter Marnie Honerkamp. She is survived by seven of her children: Kathy Hoskin of Piedmont, SD; Nancy (Cliff) Coleman of Clark Fork, ID; Jack (Kate) Honerkamp of Chadron, NE; Teena (Rick) Evers of Umatilla, FL; Bruce (Vicki) Honerkamp of Piedmont, SD; Mary Anne (Brad) Lynes of Kingman, AZ; and Jody (Tim) Jackson of Durham, NC. She is also survived by her sister Trudie (John) Vitale of St. Louis, MO, and a great many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5-7pm Friday, May 4 at Osheim-Schmidt funeral home; vigil service to follow. Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30am Saturday, May 5 at Our Lady of the Black Hills Catholic Church in Piedmont. Luncheon reception will follow.
