Obituary

Rapid City-Marilyn Lee Davis, 77 died Sunday May 3, 2015 at Rapid City Regional Hospital from complications stemming from her 28 year battle with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Marilyn was born August 5, 1937 on the family farm, the Old Jones Homestead in the Wellington Township in Minnehaha County, SD, to Arthur and Leona (Smith) Jones. She grew up on the family farm north of Parker, SD. She attended country school and graduated from Parker High School. After High School she worked at the Turner County Auditor's Office in Parker, SD. She met Gerald (Jerry) Davis who was a school teacher in Parker. They were married on December 28th, 1958 and moved to Darmstadt, Germany as Jerry served with the United States Army. After moving back to the United States, Jerry and Marilyn lived in Ft. Sill, OK, Kingsley, IA, and Mitchell, Pierre and Rapid City, SD. When living in Pierre, Marilyn worked at Friman Oil. Marilyn enjoyed playing softball, was a pitcher on the Parker/Monroe team and continued to play on teams until the age of 48. While always a fan of the Minnesota Twins, when she could no longer play ball, she avidly coached the Twins from her living room. She played guitar and had the Jones family gift of playing the piano "by ear". She was a longtime member of the Pierre Square Dancer's Club, where she and Jerry made lifelong friends. Marilyn was an active member of the Lutheran churches in the communities where she lived. When her health prevented her from attending services, she enjoyed watching services on television, visits from the parish nurse and pastor. Marilyn was happiest spending time with her family and friends. She relished their company for casual visits, camping trips, the annual opening day Davis family pheasant hunt where she served as the camp cook, and all celebrations. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents: Brother Dale (Doc) Jones, two sisters: Ellen Berg and Arlene Gates, and daughter in law Jodi Davis. She is survived by three sons: Marty (Amy) Davis, Black Hawk, Mark (Kathryn) Davis, Rapid City, Mike Davis, Hitchcock, daughter Mari (Mark) Ascherin, Rapid City, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Services will be at 10:30 am on Thursday May 7, 2015 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church (behind Dairy Queen on Rushmore Street off of Canyon Lake Drive) with the Rev. Joshua Jones officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service. Burial will be at Mountain View Cemetery. There will be lunch served at Bethlehem Lutheran Church directly after the burial service. Memorials gifts may be directed to Zoe Jones' Cerebral Palsy treatment. Zoe is the daughter of Pastor Josh and Jaimie Jones.
