Obituary

PIEDMONT - Marion L. (Runnalls) Bies, 90, Piedmont, passed to the lord on Wednesday, Dec. 24, 2008, at her home surrounded by her family. Marion was born May 10, 1918, in Piedmont to Jacob and Florence Runnalls. The family then settled on their homestead in Ridge, MT, until the passing of her father. They then moved back to Piedmont, where she grew up living with her grandmother Louisa Miller and attended school there through the eighth grade. She worked many long, hard days on her Uncle E.W. Miller's ranch, haying up and down Piedmont Valley. She met her future husband Lloyd Bies, when he came from Salem, to work in the CCC camps. They were united in marriage July 26, 1934, in Rapid City. They moved throughout the Black Hills while working in the CCC camps and later moved to Rapid City. She was married 54 years until the passing of her husband in 1980. To this union, four daughters and three sons were born, one daughter passed away in infancy. She returned to Piedmont after the death of her husband and resided on land that was part of her uncle's original ranch. Marion was a loving wife, homemaker and caretaker of many family and friends. She also worked at various cafes in the Rapid City area. Family and friends were very important to Marion and she enjoyed attending many activities with her children, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren of which, rodeo was one of her great joys. She was very proud of her "cowboys and cowgirls." She enjoyed family get-togethers, fishing, riding horses, sewing circle and the love of her life - dancing. She loved to travel and visited England, Russia, Canada and Alaska. Survivors include two sons, Harold (Judy) Bies of Rapid City, and David Bies of Piedmont; two daughters, Joy (Marvin) Kammerer and LaRay (Tom) Davey, all of Rapid City; 32 grandchildren; 88 great-grandchildren; and 24 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two sisters,one brother, two daughters, Florence Bies and Mary Burnett, and son, Newell Bies Sr. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28, at the Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 29, at the Grace United Methodist Church in Piedmont, with the Rev. Howie Baird officiating. Burial will be at the Piedmont Cemetery. A memorial has been established to the Piedmont Cemetery Association.
