Obituary

Marjorie Mae Blumenthal was born May 2, 1935 in Faulkton, South Dakota.  Her parents were William Frantz and Margaret Miller.  She was only in Faulkton a few years until her family moved to Watertown, South Dakota where she spent most of her childhood.  During high school Marjorie was a lifeguard and swimming instructor at Lake Kampeska, worked as a car hop and was a paid member of the American Legion Band (playing the clarinet).

After graduating from high school, she enrolled at the University of South Dakota and pursued a degree in elementary education.   While at USD she met the love of her life Ben Blumenthal.  They married August 20, 1955 and moved to Rapid City.  Ben worked in the family business, BLUMENTHALS, a fashionable women's clothing store and Marjorie taught 3rd grade at Robbinsdale Elementary School.

After two years of teaching Marjorie's educational career was interrupted in 1957 by the birth of Brent, followed two years later by the arrival of Brad, and then, two years later the birth of Bob.  She was a stay-at-home mom, but still provided sage advice to Ben as he ran the family business.  She loved entertaining, playing bridge, bowling, later golf, was a 50-year member of the PEO sorority, and was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church.  She loved to refinish large pieces of furniture; she was also a knitter.  She loved to garden and canned hundreds of jars of dill pickles.

After their boys had left the nest, she and Ben were able to travel.  They found their ideal retirement home in Naples Florida.  Both mom and dad loved the warm weather, palm trees, sandy beaches, and the Gulf of Mexico.  They would spend winters in Florida and summers in Rapid City Ben and Marjorie also became doting grandparents during these years.  Eventually they were able to enrich the lives of 6 grandchildren.  Later Marjorie would enjoy being great grandma to 5 delightful children.

Marjorie suffered a terrible tragedy when Ben unexpectedly passed away in 2003.  She then relocated back to Rapid City full time.  She traveled some, but not with the passion for travel she once had.  She eventually found her way to the Westhills Village and spent many years in an independent living apartment, as her health continued to decline, she moved into their assisted living option and then the Westhills Health Center.  The move to Westhills was a blessing to mom.  She thrived in the ability to visit old friends, meet new friends, take part in many activities and experience the abundant love and caring of the Westhills employees.

She is survived by her children, Brent Blumenthal (Julie Sieh) of Georgetown, Texas, Brad Blumenthal (Pam Chaussee) of Rapid City, and Bob Blumenthal (Janet Blumenthal) of Punta Gorda, Florida.  Grand children include:  Tyler (Laura), Rapid City, Nicole Davis (Kyle) Carson City, Nevada, Andrea Pasker (Adam) Des Moines, Iowa, Abe Blumenthal, Middletown, Connecticut, Ben Blumenthal (Kristen), Houston Texas, and Sam Blumenthal (Tess) Georgetown, Texas.  Sister in law Marilyn Frantz, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Great grand children include Leah, Colby and Dane Blumenthal, Rapid City and Autumn and Lilly Blumenthal, Houston Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Margaret Frantz, her beloved younger brother BillFrantz, and her husband Ben.
