Obituary

Rapid CityMarjorie M. Herrick, 78, Rapid City, died on May 15, 2008 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Marjorie was born on September 2, 1929 in Strool, South Dakota to Ray and Mabel Fitzgerald. Her family included a sister, Frances, and a brother, Maurice (who became president of Black Hills State Universitysomething Marjorie was very proud of). Marjories father had a baseball team, and one of the players on this team, Jesse Herrick, would become Marjories husband of 57 years. They married on October 2, 1950 and had three children: Maureen, Jess (Casey), and Robert. Marjorie earned a two-year teaching degree from Black Hills Teachers College. She began her career teaching in Richland, Washington (where Jesse was serving in the army). After they moved back to the Midwest, Marjorie worked in the school system as a substitute teacher, and also as a library aide with the Rapid City School District, until her retirement in 1990. Marjorie liked traveling (she visited Ireland twice) and she also enjoyed the local scenery of the Black Hills. Much to the delight of her family, Marjorie devoted a lot of time to her primary hobbies: baking and sewing. Her caramel rolls and Christmas cookies are legendary. She could also sew anything. Her quilts were her masterpieces; they came in all colors and patterns, and were bestowed with strict instructions about proper care. Marjorie also liked crossword puzzles, mystery novels, and watching her favorite golfer, Tiger Woods, play. Most of all, Marjorie enjoyed spending time with her family, who will miss her very much. They are: husband, Jesse Herrick, Rapid City; children, Maureen Stevens, Rapid City, Casey Herrick (Barbara), Rapid City, and Robert Herrick, Winchester, Virginia; sister, Frances Hoffman, Siletz, Oregon; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.She is preceded in death by her parents, Ray Fitzgerald and Mabel Hanks, and her brother, Maurice Fitzgerald. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with a Christian wake service at 7:30 p.m., Monday, May 19 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 20 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help with Rev. Marcin Garbacz presiding.Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. A memorial has been established.
