Obituary

Rapid City Martin L. Jolley, 68, Rapid City, died Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Marty was born July 8, 1942 to R. J. Bob Jolley and Marjorie Alma (Waldman) Jolley at Rapid City. He attended kindergarten at the old Columban Hall in Sturgis and 1st thru 8th grades at St. Martins Academy. There he took piano lessons from Sisters Clement and David and played duets with his mother. He always loved Rock & Roll, Boogie Woogie and Gregorian Chants. He loved growing up in Sturgis, living within 2 blocks of both his grandparents and riding his bike 7 miles to his aunt and uncles ranches located at the base of Bear Butte on Bear Butte Creek. There he learned to hunt, fish and to can food with his mother and aunts. He attended Sturgis high school where he engages in sports, was president of his class for several years and Homecoming King when he was a Senior. He graduated from Sturgis Brown High School in 1960. Marty then attended the S D School of Mines & Technology where, as a freshman, he was a starting half-back on the varsity football team. He attended Worsham College of Mortuary Science in Chicago, Ill. and entered the family business in Sturgis following graduation. While at Worsham he earned the top Restorative Art award. Marty and his brother Clint purchased the family funeral home which they operated until 1990 when they sold the business. During that time they grew the Sturgis business and purchased the funeral home in Deadwood and opened a funeral home in Spearfish. In 1981 the National Funeral Directors Association awarded the brothers 4th place in the nation Pursuit of Excellence Award. They opened the first crematory in the area, developed a preneed department called Preferred Services Group and Marty was one of the 1st EMTs in the area taking his training at Hennepin County Hospital in Minneapolis, MN. Marty was Meade County Coroner for 16 years, elected twice as President of Sturgis Chamber of Commerce, president of the Sturgis Jaycees, a board member of the Sturgis Community Hospital, a Life member of American Legion Post 33, President of the Society of Black Hills Pioneers and was a licensed mortician in the state of Montana. He was married to Ellen A. Nash on January 17, 1969 at Rapid City and they had 3 children, Marc, Nathan & Marty Lynn. In 1964 he joined the S.D. National Guard in Sturgis and following basic training, attended Army Medical School at Ft. Sam Houston, TX. He graduated from the S. D. Officers Training School and was assigned to the 842nd Engr. Co. in Deadwood & Lead. He was then assigned to the 109th BN in Sturgis. Because of business pressures be retired from the guard as a First Lt. in 1971. He was married to June E. (Huchendorf) Aldren March 28, 1992 at Spearfish. The couple lived in Spearfish and Marty worked for Sturgis sculpture, Dale Lamphere for several years as office manager and head of marketing. In 1996 they moved to Rapid City where Marty re-entered the funeral business with Osheim-Catron Funeral Home. Because of health problems he retired in 2003 and has continued to work part time since. Marty loved hunting and fishing, took up taxidermy, graduated from Black Hills State Univ. with a degree in Sociology and minor in Art in 1991. He was a private pilot and owned his own plane , drove cars for Hertz Rental Cars and had many other retirement activities. Marty only wanted in as much time as God would allow, the freedom to grow, be and do. He is survived by his wife, June E. Jolley, Rapid City, two sons, Marc (Haley) Jolley, Spearfish, Nathan (Shonda) Jolley, Sturgis, 1 daughter, Marty Lynn Jolley, Sioux Falls, 1 brother, Clint (Sandi) Jolley, Rapid City; 3 step-sons, Jim (Margaret) Aldren, Jr., Black Hawk, Jon (Heidi) Aldren, Whitewood, and Jerry (Sheri) Aldren, Lincoln, Ca; 1 step-daughter, Janice (John) Simons, Enning, SD, an aunt, Dorothy Chase, Richland, WA, 23 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, one nephew, Barett Jolley, a step-great grandson, Christian John Van Horn and a great grand daughter, Kristi Simons Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 Thursday, May 5, with a prayer service at 7:00 pm at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11:00 Friday at Our Lady of the Black Hills in Piedmont with Fr. Mark McCormick presiding. Burial will be in St. Aloysius Cemetery in Sturgis.
