Obituary

RAPID CITY - Marvin E. Basham, 94, Rapid City, died Friday, Oct. 28, 2011, at a local nursing home. He was born Aug. 29, 1917, in Woonsocket, the son of George E. and Celia (Ronstad) Basham. Following his father's death, Marvin moved with his family to Rapid City when he was 15 years old. He graduated from Rapid City High School and attended the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. He married Hazel Hume in 1940. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1943 until 1946. Following his military service the family returned to Rapid City. Marvin had a long history of employment with Reptile Gardens in Rapid City. He was still employed at Reptile Gardens at the age of 90. Aside from his family, Reptile Gardens was the most important thing in his life. He was a longtime member of the Atonement Lutheran Church. Survivors include two sons, Mike Basham, Maple Grove, Minn., and Bob Basham and his wife DeAnna, Aberdeen; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife in 2004. Visitation will be for one hour before services. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home, with Rev. Jon Mapa officiating. Interment with military honors will be at Black Rills National Cemetery near Sturgis. A memorial has been established for the Atonement Lutheran Church.
