Marvin Bitterman, 85, of Rapid City, died Sunday, February 19, 2017 at the Ft Meade Veterans Administration Hospital.
He was born March 7, 1931 in Tripp, SD to Ferdinand and Mollie (Renner) Bitterman. He grew up in the Delmont and Parkston area and attended school in Parkston.
Marv served with the U.S. Army in Korea, and was honorably discharged in 1954 as a sergeant. He was a lifetime member of the VFW.
Marvin married Gladys Bietz on May 16, 1954 in Tripp, SD. They had three boys; Lyle, Lee and Lynn. During their 63 years of marriage, Marvin and Gladys lived in several different locations throughout South Dakota. During that time, Marv was a farmer, a barber, salesman, a driver for S & S Transportation and an armored truck driver. In 1990, they moved to Rapid City and Marv and Gladys became apartment complex managers.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards.
Marv is survived by two sons; Lee (Sue) Bitterman, Lyman, WY and Lynn Bitterman, Gillette, WY, eight grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren with another on the way, a brother, LeRoy Bitterman, Sioux Falls and three sisters; Ruth (Elroy) Lippert, Parkston, Elaine (Albert) Hirsch, Rapid City and Betty Gehring, Brookings, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys in December of 2016, his parents, a sister Leona Ledeboer and her husband, Lloyd and a brother in law, Duane Gehring.
A visitation will be held from 5:00pm until 7:00pm on Thursday, February 23, 2017 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Friday, Feb 24 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral home with Pastor Susan Huffman officiating. Interment with military honors will be at Black Hills National Cemetery.
A memorial will be established to the First Congregational Church.
