Obituary

Marvin William Curtis Funeral services for Marvin W. Curtis will be Wednesday May 7, 2014, at 10:00 AM at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home; concluding with a graveside service 12:00PM at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with military honors rendered by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the South Dakota National Guard. Visitation is Tuesday, May 6, from 5:00PM - 7:00PM at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Marvin passed away of natural causes May 1, 2014 at the WestHills Health Care facility, Rapid City, SD. Age 97. Marvin was born Jan. 30, 1917 in Wessington, S.D. He was raised on a farm in Beadle County along with 6 sisters and 2 brothers. After attending county school he went on to graduate in 1934 from Wessington High School. After graduation, Marv moved to Rapid City and worked for his brother at a service station but later returned to the farm to help his father. May 1942 he joined the Navy - Aviation Division and spent most of 4 years on an aircraft carrier. After an honorable discharge in January 1946 he returned to Rapid City and back into work in the petroleum industry. He also attended night classes at National Business College and, there, met his future wife, Maxine. Marvin had an employment career as manager of Puritan Supply Company located at 3rd and Main in Rapid City. He and wife, Maxine also incorporated their own petroleum jobbing company in 1958 and established a Texaco distributorship. Marvin was past president of: Rapid City Lions Club, Arrowhead Country Club, South Dakota Oilmen's Assoc., a life member of the Elks Lodge and a member of First United Methodist Church. Past board memberships included the R.C. Credit Bureau, S.D. Petroleum Council, Rushmore State Bank, United Way Campaign, Westhills Retirement Village, and the R.C. Boys and Girls Club. Marvin is survived by 3 sons their wives: Norman (Carol), Richard (Ronda), and Rodney (Juanita); eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by parents Mattie and Albert Charles Curtis, wife Maxine, and all siblings: LeRoy, Floyd, Gladys, Mildred, Clara, Ruth, Dorothy and Helen.
