Obituary

Rapid City - Marvin Knapp, 80, While in the thoughts and prayers of many and surrounded by his wife and children, Marvin Knapp took the hand of his lord and savior, Jesus Christ, and finished his walk home on Wednesday April 4th, 2012. Having recently celebrated his 80th birthday, Marvin lived a full and wonderful life marked by great friends and family along the way. Born on January 16th, 1932, he was one of nine children growing up on his parents' farm just east of the small town of Eureka, SD. He loved to tell us stories of life growing up on the farm, which we always found interesting if not hilarious. On weekends he would go to town with friends "to look for girls". There he found his lifetime love, Irene Heiser. Ever practical, they postponed marriage until after he returned from the war "just in case something happened over there". Marvin served as a corporal in the Army in the Korean War and was a proud veteran, becoming very active in the VFW over the last several years. After returning from the war he married "his darling", Irene on Jan. 7, 1955 and within a few years they made their home in Rapid City. In answer to their prayers, they joyously adopted their two children, Shawn Cameron Knapp and Tanya Lynn Knapp. He spent their formative years teaching them to fish, play baseball, build, work hard and be a good neighbor. A natural born salesman, Marvin worked in car sales for 27 years and then at Hardware Hank for another 15. With his friendly handshake and jovial manner he made friends wherever he went. An avid gardener, his love for yard work only grew over the years, and as semi-retirement set in, his yard and deck was in a constant state of growth and transformation. His vegetables have graced the table of any neighbor within shouting distance for as long as we can remember. A beloved husband, father, grandpa and friend, Marvin will be dearly missed and his memory forever treasured. He is survived by his wife Irene; two children, six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. We'd like to express a special thanks to Dr. Tenglin for his devoted care to all of us through this. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, April 9, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home, 2700 Jackson Boulevard, Rapid City. Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, at Osheim & Schmidt as well, with Pastor LeRoy Flagstad officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with full military honors by Rushmore VFW Post #1273 and South Dakota National Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church Broadcast, Korean War Vets Association Chapter 160 of Rapid City, Rapid City Regional Hospital Hospice of the Hills and Rushmore VFW Post 1273.
