Obituary

RAPID CITY- Marvin E. Schumacher, 84, passed away Wednesday, October 29, at his home surrounded by his loving family. Marvin was born on October 26, 1930 on a farm 8 ½ miles southeast of Hosmer, SD to Gottlieb and Emma Schumacher. He attended a rural school in Sangamon Township and finished high school in Hosmer. Marvin was drafted into the U.S. Army in November of 1952 and was honorably discharged in November of 1954. After his military service he married Luella Preszler on December 12, 1954 at the Reformed Church in Hosmer. In January 1955, the couple moved to Rapid City and shortly after Marvin attended West River Trade School for auto mechanics. His career as a diesel mechanic lasted nearly 40 years. He worked for International Harvester, Brekhus International and in 1975 he went to work at Ellsworth Air Force Base where he retired in 1994. Throughout his life, Marvin always kept himself busy. He enjoyed fishing, camping, woodworking, doing yard work, and lending a helping hand to his children and grandchildren. He liked traveling, woodcarving, and was a member of Hay Camp Woodcarvers. He was a loving and devoted husband and father. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Luella; three children: Sheryl Dietrich, Greg Schumacher, and Lori (Kurt) Weber, all of Rapid City; two sisters: Viola Winkler and Mildred Preszler; three brothers: Leo, Robert, and a twin brother, Ivan Schumacher; four grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents: Emma and Gottlieb; two sisters: one in infancy and Darlene Kramlich; three brothers: Lawrence, Herbert, and Delbert Schumacher. Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. David Schwan and the Rev. Paul Winckler officiating. Visitation will be for one hour prior to services. Interment will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 3, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis with full military honors provided by the Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the South Dakota Army National Guard.
