Obituary

RAPID CITY - Marvin Lee Uhre, 86, Rapid City, passed away Friday, March 4, 2011, just before midnight at the Hospice House in Rapid City. Marvin was born Oct. 27, 1924, to Albert and Anna Belle Uhre in Mount Vernon. The youngest of three sons, he was born into the life he lived that of a farmer. He was baptized as a child and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran in Letcher. He attended Mount Vernon School, but dropped out two years before graduation to help out on the farm during World War II. While still a student, he was also the bus driver at a surprising 16 years of age. On Aug. 25, 1946, he married Donna Mae Ischen from Artesian. Marvin and Donna had two sons, Rick and Craig, and were farmers for 38 years. Marvin was one of those fortunate men who loved what he did and did what he loved work on the farm. He was very active for years in his community in the rural Mount Vernon area, serving in multiple capacities in Trinity Lutheran Church, as a member of the Mason's Club, and on the Rural School Board. In 1984, they moved to Rapid City to be near their children and grandchildren, who Marvin loved dearly. He was a regular at all of his grandchildren's sporting events, recitals, concerts, and ceremonies. Marvin worked at the Rapid City Ace Hardware for 20 years. Marvin enjoyed traveling, especially long road trips with his family. He loved dancing, and was regularly seen cutting a rug at the Senior Citizens' Center with his wife or granddaughters. One thing his family was never allowed to forget was their Norwegian heritage. He was determined to make sure all of his kin had acquired the proper taste and respect for lutefisk that was befitting those of Scandinavian stock. He and Donna were true soul mates, having been married for 64 years. He is also survived by two sons, Rick Uhre and Craig Uhre and his wife, Joan; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren with one more on the way. He is preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Dale, who was killed in World War II; and his brother Bernard. Marvin will be missed as he has been loved faithfully and deeply. May he rest in peace. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, March 7, at Osheim Schmidt Funeral Home. A celebration of Marvin's life will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 8, at First United Methodist Church in downtown Rapid City, with the Rev. Doug Diehl officiating. Memorials have been established to Rapid City Hospice House or First United Methodist Church.
