Schmitz
October 13, 1932 – April 8, 2026
Mary Ann (Mickey) Schmitz, 93, of Rapid City, passed away peacefully April 8th, 2026, at Monument Health Hospice House in Rapid City.
Mary Ann (Mickey) Schmitz was born to Allan and Amanda (Raabe) Johnston October 13, 1932, in Rapid City, South Dakota. She was the youngest sister to two brothers, Mose and Blaine and two sisters Janice and Kathleen. Born and raised in Rapid City, she graduated from Central High School in 1950. After high school, she met the love of her life, Robert ‘Bob’ Schmitz. They were married June 27, 1954, and enjoyed 63 wonderful years together. Together they had one son, Bobby (Lorene) Schmitz, and two daughters, Tracey, and Cindy (Todd) Dressler; eight grandchildren: Coree (Joe) Palatucci; Cara (Christopher) Mittleider; Amy Schmitz; Lane (Myranda) Quinn; Brady, Ben, Joe (Hayley) and Aftan Mcmartin; and seven great-grandchildren: Chase, Zoey, Hank, Miles, Jackson, Jameson and Sunday. Mickey maintained an ongoing relationship with her numerous nieces. After their marriage Mickey devoted her life to supporting her husband with their trucking and ranching businesses and caring for her children. She always wanted the best for her children and actively helped them, often strongly encouraging them to challenge themselves to achieve their greatest potential. Apart from four years in Des Moines, Iowa, Mickey lived on the family ranch on Nemo Road until the time of her passing.
Mickey enjoyed numerous hobbies during her life. She was a very accomplished bowler, an avid reader, gardener and loved to travel. A few of her favorite destinations included a trip to Ireland, cruises to Alaska and the Panama Canal, Disney World, Australia and Czechoslovakia. She was a lifelong member of South Canyon Lutheran Church. She was an individual of strong faith and hosted weekly Bible study meetings right up to the time of her death. She enjoyed staying connected with family and friends. She loved sending handwritten letters to grandchildren and great-grandchildren so that they would have a remembrance of her. She was always willing to take on new challenges, more recently learning to navigate a smartphone where she mastered numerous word games, stayed in touch with family and friends via text messages and quenched her thirst for knowledge using Google.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Allan and Amanda Johnston; husband, Bob; daughter, Tracey Schmitz; sisters, Janice and Kathleen; and brothers, Mose and Blaine.
Visitation will be Thursday, April 16th, from 5:00 -7:00 pm at South Canyon Lutheran Church.
Services for Mickey will be at 10:30 am on Friday, April 17th, at South Canyon Lutheran Church followed by a luncheon. Burial will follow at the Nemo Cemetery.
