Mary Carroll Berkebile, 79, passed away at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 12, 2015, at Westhills Village Health Care. Mary was born Dec. 25, 1935, in Urbana, IL, to Jerry and Helen (Green) Jordan. She grew up in St. Joseph, IL, graduating in 1957 from DePauw University in Greencastle, IN, with a degree in history. Mary married Dale E. Berkebile on August 25, 1957, and they were happily married for 58 years. Mary and Dale have lived in Rapid City since 1968. The activities that were important to her during her life were being a member of the Rapid City Library Board, the League of Women Voters for whom she served as president in South Dakota, Hospice of the Hills and Democracy In Action. Mary was a very active woman and enjoyed skiing, tennis and hiking. She climbed Harney Peak more than one hundred times. As a tennis player, she held a ranking in South Dakota, and she was very proud of this achievement. In the latter part of her life, Mary enjoyed enormously, the time she spent with her grandchildren and more recently, her great-grandchildren. Her sense of humor stayed with her to the end. She will be deeply missed for her keen wit, her active intellect and her passion for politics and football. Go Pats! Mary is survived by her husband, Dale; daughters, Susan Berkebile and Sally Berkebile; daughter-in-law, Sherry Berkebile; and grandchildren, Melissa, Lindsey, Matthew and Jordan. She was preceded in death by her son, Chuck Berkebile. Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 20, at the First United Methodist Church, 629 Kansas City St., with Pastors Greg Kroger and Sharla McCaskell officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Planned Parenthood of South Dakota or Democracy In Action.
