Obituary

Mary Elaine Slaughter Campbell, 87, passed away in Sunnyvale, Calif. on Saturday, August 9, 2008. She was born Christmas day, 1920, to Morris Benjamin and Verna Harriet Lundak Slaughter in Herrick, SD and grew up in South Dakota and Minnesota. She graduated from Redfield High School in 1938 and received her bachelor's degree in business from the University of South Dakota in 1942, where she was a member of the Alpha Phi Sorority. Mary married her childhood sweetheart, Ronald Campbell on May 31, 1944, at Westover Field, MA. After the completion of Ron's wartime mimlitary duty, they returned to the Midwest to raise their family. They were both very involved in civic an dcommunity activities in Rapid City. Mary was an excellent seamstress, avid bridge player and exceptional mathematician as well as a devoted and involved mother. Ron passed away in 1986 and in 2000, Mary moved to California to be closer to family. She is survived by her daughters, Jan (Jim) Steichen, Sunnyvale and Jean Campbell, Phoenix; 2 grandchildren, Greg (Natalie) Steichen of San Jose, CA and Abigail Steichen of Portland, OR; a great-grandson, Cevin Steichen of San JOse; nieces, Susan (Clair) Maynard and Sybil (Chuck) Rounds, of Rapid City and a nephew Scott (Natalie) Lynn, Boulder, CO. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ron in 1986, and her sister and brother in law, Hope and Kelton Lynn. Visitation will be one hour prior to services, which will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug 15, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with Pastor Henry Bradshaw officiating. Burial will follow in Black Hills National Cemetery. The family requests no flowers, please, and asks that any memorials be directed in her name to the University of South Dakota Foundation, Vermillion, SD.
