Obituary

Mary Kay Coughlin, 93, passed away on Thursday, February 12, 2015, at Clarkson Health Care in Rapid City. Mary Kathryn Dolan was born on May 24, 1921, in Elkton, to James C. and Loretta (Fleming) Dolan. She graduated from Flandreau Public School and Eastern Normal in Madison. Mary Kay taught elementary school for 6 years prior to her marriage. She was united in marriage to Frank Coughlin on August 12, 1946. Frank was killed in the Korean War in 1951. Mary Kay then began a long career in civil service, first at the Bureau of Reclamation, then the US Public Health Service and, in 1966, she moved to Rapid City to set up a US Civil Service Commission office. After her retirement from the Federal Government, she was employed for 13 years at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Mary Kay was active in Catholic Daughters of America, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and ZONTA. Survivors include 3 nieces, Kay Frances Dolan, Alexandria, VA, Kelly Draper, Tempe, AZ and Mary Beth Cox, Aurora, CO; a nephew, Robert Dolan, Gretna, NE; a cousin, Mary J. Fleming, Flandreau; 3 great nieces, 1 great nephew and 1 great great niece. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Frank and 2 brothers, Francis and Norbert. Visitation will be on Sunday, Feb. 15, from 6 until 7 pm, with a Christian wake service at 7 pm at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home in Rapid City. A Christian funeral mass will be offered at 10:00 am on Monday, Feb. 16, at the Church of St. Therese in Rapid City, with the Rev. William Zandri presiding. Burial will be on Tuesday, Feb. 17, at 1:00 pm, in St. Mary's Cemetery in Elkton. Memorials may be directed to the Church of St. Therese, the Little Flower, 532 Adams St., Rapid City, SD 57701.
