Mary Catherine (Collins) Erickson, affectionately known to many as "Collie," was born on November 3, 1946, in the quaint mining town of Buchans, Newfoundland, Canada. From these humble beginnings, she blossomed into a woman of exceptional intellect and warmth, leaving an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing her. She passed away peacefully on May 28, 2026, at her home in Rapid City, South Dakota, leaving behind a legacy defined by devotion, kindness, and an insatiable passion for life's riches.

Educated to the highest standards, Mary Catherine earned her Master’s degree, a testament to her deep commitment to learning and growth. She carried this dedication into a remarkable career that spanned thirty-six years as a beloved teacher. Through decades of nurturing young minds, she instilled not only knowledge but also compassion and resilience—a reflection of her own radiant personality. Known for her sharp intellect, care for others, and a keen sense of humor that could brighten even the cloudiest of days, Mary Catherine was truly a beacon in the lives she touched.

Her life was a tapestry enriched with vivid memories, among the most treasured being the journeys she undertook with her beloved daughter, Jennifer Evans. Their travels to Newfoundland—her cherished birthplace—were moments of profound joy and connection, a bridge between past and present, and a celebration of heritage and family.

Mary Catherine’s spirit was deeply rooted in her Irish/Newfoundland heritage. She found solace and joy in reading and the engaging challenge of crossword puzzles, pursuits that kept her mind sharp and her curiosity alive. Her love for Ireland and its culture was a thread woven delicately into the fabric of her daily existence.

Though dearly departed from this world, Mary Catherine's memory is lovingly preserved by those who survive her: her devoted daughter Jennifer Evans of Rapid City; three cherished sisters, Elizabeth Nowlan, Regina Bailey (and her husband Bill), and Helen O’Brien; along with numerous nieces and nephews who remember their aunt with fondness and admiration. She was preceded in death by her parents, as well as her brothers, Michael J. Collins and Paul Collins, to whom she was deeply attached.

A Celebration of Life will be held to honor Mary Catherine’s remarkable journey on June 13, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at the Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home, located at 2700 Jackson Blvd, Rapid City, SD 57702. Friends and family are invited to gather and reflect on a life filled with love, laughter, and unyielding strength.

In Mary Catherine (Collins) Erickson, we remember a woman whose heart was as expansive as the landscapes she adored, whose mind was as sharp as the Atlantic winds of Newfoundland, and whose legacy will continue to inspire all who knew her. Her passage leaves a silence felt deeply, yet her spirit endures, forever entwined in the hearts of her loved ones. May she rest in eternal peace.
