Obituary

Mary L. Hopkins, 67, of Box Elder, passed away on Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at her home. Mary was born on September 21, 1947, in Rockford, IL to Andrew and Della (Montoya) Valnick. She grew up in Crystal Lake, IL and graduated from Cary-Grove High School in Cary, IL. After high school she enlisted in the US Navy and served from 1966 until 1969. She was united in marriage to Donald L. Hopkins on August 25, 1969. They started their family and lived for 23 years in northern Wisconsin. She and Donald retired to Rapid City and have lived here for 21 years. Mary loved to cook, draw, paint and fish. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Mary's love and devotion was shared with many while she served as a Sgt. with the Pennington County Sheriff's Department, where she was a Juvenile Corrections Officer. There she will be forever loved, respected and known as "Little Mary." She will also be forever remember and loved by her husband, children and grandchildren. Her spirit and love will live with us all forever. Survivors include her husband, Donald L. Hopkins, of Box Elder, a daughter, Tina A. Kennebeck, of Lead; a son, Donald M. (Nancy) Hopkins, of Yankton; 3 grandchildren, Madeleine (Josh Fleitman) Kennebeck, Raven Kennebeck and Colton Hopkins; 3 sisters, Betty Valnick, of Box Elder, Patricia (Clair) Anderson, of Sand Creek, WI and Antoinette Kennebeck, of Fox Lake, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, John. A visitation will be held on Monday, July 13 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. A Christian funeral mass will be offered at 10:00 am, on Tuesday, July 14, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Interment will be in the Black Hills National Cemetery at 1:30 pm with military honors rendered by the US Navy and Rushmore VFW Post 1273 of Rapid City.
