Obituary

Mary Louise Hummel, 92 of Cave Creek, AZ formerly of Rapid City passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at Paradise Valley Assisted Living in Paradise, AZ.

Visitation will be from 6:00pm-7:00pm Sunday, March 15 at Osheim and Schmidt Funeral Home with a Rosary to begin at 7:00pm at the funeral home. A Christian Funeral Mass will be 10:00am Monday, March 16 at Our Lady of the Black Hills Catholic Church in Piedmont, with Fr. Andrzej Wyrostek. Interment will be 12:30pm at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. Memorial can be made in Mary's name to Foothills Caring Corp Carefree, AZ or Our Lady of the Black Hills Catholic Church. Mary was born November 18, 1927 in Petersburg, Nebraska to Louis Anthony and Bernadine Elizabeth (Schumacher) Van Ert. She worked on the family farm, then moving as a child to Oakdale and Elgon, NE. She eventually moved to Rapid City. While working at the downtown Ben Franklin Store she met a fine bachelor, Victor Jerome Hummel, driving a new 1960 Thunderbird and they were married April 16, 1964. They lived n Rapid City, and eventually settled outside of Rapid City near Black Hawk for the next 46 years. She continued to live outside of Black Hawk after Victor's passing in 1987. She moved to Cave Creek, AZ after finally retiring at age 85!

Mary was a member of 33 years to Our Lady of the Black Hills Catholic Church, 6 years at St. Gabriel's in Cave Creek, VFW Auxiliary, and Our Lady of the Black Hills Volunteer.

Mary is survived by her children; Brian Hummel of Phoenix, Lora (Tom) Hummel-Koch of Spearfish, sisters; Barbara Jean Furley of Branson, MO, Norma (Lyle) Schwarting of Lincoln, NE, sisters-in-law; Mary Van Ert of North Platte, NE, Marty Van Ert of Leon, IA, grandchildren; Kelsey (Aaron) Kurtenbach of Rapid City, Daniel Mayer of Rapid City, Taylor Koch of Sioux Falls, Cameron Koch of Spearfish, many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Mary is preceded in death by her husband; Victor Hummel, parents, siblings; Phila Mae Dredge, Mildred Zessin, Susie Rush, Irvin Van Ert, Floyd Van Ert, Leonard Van Ert.
