Obituary

RAPID CITY | Mary Bernadette Newlin Katen (nee Hausman) passed away March 26, 2017, in Rapid City.

"Bernadette" as she was known then, was born May 20, 1933, to Harvey and Mary Hausman (both deceased) in Pierre, and was raised there with her brothers Vincent and Mahlon (also deceased). She grew up very involved in the Catholic Church and served as a Page at the South Dakota State Capitol. She attended the Notre Dame Academy and Pierre High School.

In 1951, she married Douglas Monte Newlin (deceased). They raised two children: a son, Stephen D. Newlin, and a daughter Nancy M. Newlin (deceased).

Mary lived most of her adult life in Rapid City. She later was re-married to Kenneth P. Katen in 1988, until his passing in 2015.

She worked very hard to support her family and was employed many years at Osborn's Men's Clothing Store — first at Baken Park, and later at Rushmore Mall. She got to know her clients well, and truly enjoyed when they would stop in to say hello. She frequently volunteered and baked for various events at her Catholic Church.

She loved to help and care for others and enjoyed cooking. She had a great sense of humor and loved to make people laugh. One of her favorite past-times was playing cards with friends.

Mary is survived by her son, Stephen (Michelle), adoring grandsons, Grant and Scott Newlin, as well as several nieces and nephews, all of whom she loved dearly.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at St. Therese Catholic Church.

Burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made in Mary's name to her beloved church, St. Therese the Little Flower, 532 Adams St., Rapid City, SD 57701.
