Mary Gilles Konantz, 95 died Friday, April 20, in Rapid City, SD. She was a former resident of Hot Springs, SD. Born on May 26, 1916, in Woonsocket, SD, to Peter and Margaret (Privet) Gilles, she was a lifelong resident of South Dakota. She came to Rapid City as a child with her parents and older sister, Orylle. After graduating from Cathedral High School in 1934, she worked for the Federal Land Bank. She met her husband, Melchior Konantz at church, and they were married on March 25, 1940, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Except for a short stay in Washington State during World War II, she lived in the Black Hills until her death. Survivors include three sons: John (Lynelle) of Green Valley, AZ; Mark of St. Augustine, FL; and Luke (Susan) of Grand Junction, CO; four grandchildren, Susan, Josh, Lily, and Ramana; and one great-grandchild, Nathan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Melchior John Konantz, and her sister, Orylle Gilles Jarchow. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm May 19, 2012 at the Our Lady Chapel at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Interment will follow the service in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
