Obituary

Mary R. Maks, 82, of Grand Island, Nebraska, died Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2013, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island. Services were at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at St. Leo's Catholic Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Charles Torpey officiated. Burial will be alongside her beloved husband, Stephen, in the Black Hills National Cemetery outside of Rapid City and Sturgis, S.D., on Tuesday, Dec. 10,. at 2:00 p.m. A procession will leave Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home at 1:15 p.m. Consistent with a proud Irish tradition, visitation was held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday , Dec. 6, at the church, with a vigil service at 7. Mrs. Maks was born Dec. 29, 1930, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Dan and Pearl (Harty) Hartnett. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Steve. Survivors of the immediate family include three sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel and Susie Maks of Portland, Ore., Patrick and Margaret Maks of Columbus, Ohio, and Jeffrey and Dory Maks of Rapid City, S.D.; a daughter, Stephanie Maks of Minneapolis; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul and Marge Hartnett of Bellevue, James and Jackie Hartnett of Hubbard; and a sister, Margaret Trysla of South Sioux City. Those also left to cherish her memory include her six grandchildren, Jennifer, Kelli, Patrick, Daniel, Chris and Courtney; and numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. She was also preceded in death by her parents and recently by her brother-in-law, Henry Trysla. Mary grew up on the family farm near Hubbard. She graduated from Hubbard High School in 1949. After receiving a scholarship, she attended the College of St. Mary's in Omaha and graduated with an associate degree in medical records and library science. Mary first worked at the Creighton University School of Medicine, and while there she met the love of her life, medical student Stephen W. Maks. They were united in marriage on Feb. 7, 1953. As a couple and later as a family, Mary and Stephen lived in Rochester, Minn., (residency at the Mayo Clinic), Portland, Ore., while Steve was in private practice, Fort Meade, S.D., when Steve became Chief of Medicine at Fort Meade Medical Center, and finally, Grand Island, when Steve became Chief of Staff at the Grand Island Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Mary was a devoted wife, homemaker and mother of four. She has remained in Grand Island since Stephen passed in February 2000. She was very active in her church, St. Leo's of Grand Island, including both serving on the Parish Board and as a Eucharistic minister. She served on her Homeowner's Association Board for years as the secretary/treasurer. She was active in several charitable organizations, including P.E.O. and the A.O.K. (Acts of Kindness) Ladies organization. We miss you, Mom, but know in our heart that Dad is right now holding you in a sweet embrace. You are finally where you wanted to be.
