Billings, Montana - Mary Catherine Menning, 90, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 19th, at RiverStone Health Hospice in Billings. Mary was born Oct. 9, 1924, in Milo, Iowa, to Raymond and Lulu (Stanger) Nutting. She attended grade school by riding her beloved horse to a one room country school. She graduated from Milo High School in 1942, and from Central College in Pella, Iowa, in 1947. She completed internship as a medical technologist at General Hospital in Minneapolis in 1948 and worked for a time in Mason City, Iowa. While in college, she met J. Roy Menning who had resumed his studies after returning from World War II. They were married on August 9, 1949 and moved to Roy's hometown of Corsica, SD. During their time in Corsica, three children were born to this union, Clair, Carol and Cindy. Roy owned an insurance agency and later was appointed Insurance Commissioner of SD, which involved moving the family to Pierre, SD, in 1963. From there, they moved to Rapid City, SD, in 1966. Mary's life was focused on being a homemaker and mother to her three children. After Roy passed in 1991, she became active in the ladies' group at Westminster Presbyterian Church and enjoyed the loyal support of her church friends. In Sept. 2013, she moved to Billings, MT, to be near her daughter. She had lived a healthy life until becoming ill in May with renal and heart issues, and spent the summer in the wonderful care of the staff at RiverStone Health Hospice. The family extends their deepest gratitude to each member of the hospice staff who treated our mother as if she were their own. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy; and sister, Rayetta. She is survived by her son, Clair Menning (Magoe) of Houston, TX, and her daughters, Carol Finley of Cleveland, OH, and Cindy Reiss (Greg) of Billings; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; her nephew, Ed Beard (Donna) of Argentina; her niece, Lula Mae Clausen (Dewain) of Indianola, IA; Roy's siblings, Mary Fuller of IA, Delores and Hal Toppen of AR, Jim and Kay Menning of NE and of course, Phyllis and Ken Hanks of Rapid City, who graciously invited Mary to countless holiday meals. Cremation has taken place and graveside services are scheduled for 2:30 pm on September 18, 2015 at Black Hills National Cemetery with Rev. Bob Jacobs officiating and burial will be with her loving husband at the Black Hills National VA Cemetery near Sturgis, SD.
