Mary grew up in Greeley, CO, during the 1920's and 30's where her father worked diligently for the U.S. Post Office. She graduated from Greeley High School in 1939. She used to reminisce about family outings on the weekends and especially liked driving up to such places in the Rockies at Bear Lake at Estes Park and picnics there. She went to Washington, DC and attended George Washington University before working for the railroad retirement board in DC and later in Chicago. She decided to return to Greeley and completed the work needed to earn her degree, She was the first in her family to earn a degree. Ray and Mary finally settled in Rapid City, South Dakota in 1963 where Ray Sr. managed Fischer Furniture and then after the flood of 1972 opened a new business, Furniture World, in 1974 managing it until his retirement in 1986. As a part of the community for almost 50 years Mary was an avid reader and was involved in many book drives each year and supporting school activities for her children.
