Mary P. (Phil) Mickelson

September 28, 1922 – January 21, 2024

Mary P. (Phil) Mickelson was born to Lawrence Joseph and Carolena (Enders) Penzkover in Rice Lake, Wisconsin. She attended St. Scholastica High School in Duluth, MN until her senior year and then moved to Rice Lake, WI and graduated from Rice Lake High School in May 1940. She obtained an associate degree in Elementary Education from Barron County Teachers College in Rice Lake in May of 1942.

She taught three years in Wisconsin and married Richard N. Mickelson on December 26, 1945, in Rice Lake at St. Joseph Catholic Church. To this union, three children were born Richard, Linda and Robert. In April 1953, the family moved to South Dakota.

She worked at St. John's School of Nursing Library from 1958 – 1960 and was offered a position at SDSM&T Devereaux Library in 1960.  She worked at the library until her retirement in 1989.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard (1972)  parents and brother, Joseph Penzkover.  She is survived by her three children: Richard (Cydney) McKinney, TX, Linda (Douglas) Van Arkel Omaha, NE, Robert (Ana) Tucson, AZ, ten grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, please direct memorials to the Rapid City Catholic Newman Center.

Funeral Mass will be offered at 10:00 am, Tuesday June 18, 2024 at St. Therese the Little Flower Catholic Church (532 Adams St.) with Fr. Kerry Prendiville presiding. A luncheon will immediately follow.

Inurnment will be at 1:00 pm at Black Hills National Cemetery.
