Obituary

RAPID CITY - Mary Lou Poloncic, Rapid City, 83, died Thursday,March 29, 2012, at home surrounded by her children. Mary Lou was born April 21, 1928, at St. John McNamara Hospital Rapid City, the daughter of the late Lewis Francis Krebs and Abbie Ann Heying. She is number 10 of 11 children. She was raised on a small family farm in Rapid City and was educated in the Rapid City Catholic School system and graduated from Rapid City High School in 1946. She received a nursing degree from St John's McNamara School of Nursing in 1949 and helped organize the South Dakota Student Nurses' Association. During her nursing career she is best known for her position as a surgical supervisor for St. John's Hospital and Rapid City Regional Hospital. She was active in the Mount Rushmore Chapter of the American Business Women's Association for many years holding the offices of president, vice president, recording secretary and chairman of several committees. She was also an active member of the American Cancer Society and Red Cross. She was a charter member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, participating in Catholic Daughters of the Americas, The Twelve Apostles and the Right-to-Life Organization. She was known best by her family for the love of the outdoors, traveling, hiking, playing cards and being around her children and grandchildren. Survivors include a sister Elaine Whalen, Rapid City; two daughters, Sara (Barry) Schuring, Dell Rapids, and Margaret Ann (Dean) Kallan, Deerfield, Fla.; three sons, John W. (Missy) Poloncic III, Gillette, Wyo.; Tom (Joy) Poloncic, Rapid City, and Jim (Holly) Poloncic, Heber, Utah; 16 grandchildren, Jacqueline (John) Nemmers, Jacob, Joseph, Abbie, and Thomas Schuring, Daniel, Jaimi and David Kallan, Maggie and Lukus Poloncic, Mathew (Tiann) Poloncic and Theresa Poloncic, Rebekah, Megan, Katie, and Michael Poloncic; three great-granchildren Isabella, Ava, and John Thomas Nemmers. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:00 am, Monday, April 2, 2012 at the church, with Rev. Brian Lane officiating. Inurnment will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Rapid City.
