Mary Alice Zanka, 89, of Rapid City, died Thursday, May 28, in her home surrounded by her family. She was born March 16, 1929, in Toledo, Ohio to Fred and Eleanor Dickman. She took great pride working as a registered nurse in Toledo, Ohio. She married Jerry Zanka on Sept. 20, 1950, in Toledo, Ohio. They moved in 1959 to Rapid City and resided in their beautiful cabin home until their death. She was a charter member of South Canyon Lutheran Church in Rapid City, and was very active and enjoyed her Women's Bible Circle. She loved being outdoors and travelling, especially to her favorite destination, Yellowstone National Park. Survivors include her son, John Zanka, of Rapid City, her daughter, Mary Ann Zanka Quarve and her husband Doug, of Rapid City; 3 grandchildren, Amanda Fees and her husband, Clinton, of Summerset, Alicen Rhodes, of Boise, ID and Robert Zanka and his wife, Cynthia Carel-Zanka, of Rapid City. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Dr. Jerry Zanka in 1993, a brother, Fred Dickman, a daughter-in-law, Cindy Zanka in 2006 and and aunt Gertrude Schlieman. Services will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 1, at South Canyon Lutheran Church with the Rev. Cassandra Lamb officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to services. Burial will be in Nemo Cemetery immediately following the service. A memorial has been established in lieu of flowers at the Humane Society of the Black Hills to honor Mary's passion for animals.
