Obituary

Melvin 'Stub' Lee Wolfe (91) peacefully passed away on February 27, 2025 at Fountain Springs Healthcare Center. He was born January 18, 1934 on the family farm in Schuyler, Nebraska. He attended the area's country school and graduated from Schuyler High School in1951. Melvin was honored to have served in the United States Marine Corps from 1953-1955. He then attended college and earned his teaching degree in 1959 from Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota.

Happy to have shared his life for 67 years of marriage was Lois (Eggert) Wolfe. They married June 22, 1957 and moved to Rapid City, South Dakota in 1959 where Melvin began his 30 year career in education for the Rapid City School District. He was a teacher at South Junior High School for many years. He also was a school counselor at South Junior High and North Junior High. The last nine years (1980-1989) of Melvin's career was enjoyed as a principal at North Junior High School. Early in his career he was very proud to have helped start a girl's track program for Rapid City junior high school students.

Melvin really enjoyed cooking and sharing meals with his family and friends. He also had a passion for both vegetable and flower gardening. After Lois and he moved to an apartment, the gorgeous flower arrangements and 5 gallon buckets with tomatoes could be seen hanging off their balcony. Melvin participated in many sports throughout his life. He then enjoyed coaching and being a spectator as an adult. His love for fishing has been inherited by his children and grandchildren.

Melvin was very proud of his family and enjoyed being an important, integral part of his grandchildren's lives. He will be remembered for his kindness, selflessness, generosity, friendship, leadership, empathy, positive attitude and storytelling.

Survivors include his daughters: Janele (Floyd) Abbott of San Diego, CA and Jeanine (Richard) Corcoran of Rapid City, SD; grandchildren: Jeremy Corcoran, Amanda (Skyler) Hayes, AJ (Caitlyn) Burns; great-grandchildren: Eisen Hayes and Harrow Hayes; sisters: Corinne Splichal of Lincoln, NE and Janice Murdock of Wichita, KS.
Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, Phillip and Mary Wolfe, his beloved wife Lois on November 26, 2024, and siblings Wayne (Louise) Wolfe, Wilbur (Joan) Wolfe and Phyllis (Glen) Christianson.

There will be a private family service and Melvin's final resting place will be at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, SD.

Burial Service will take place at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
