IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Michael James
Erhart
January 31, 1949 – September 21, 2025
Michael James Erhart, age 76, of Rapid City, South Dakota, passed away unexpectedly at his home on September 21, 2025.
Mike was born on January 31, 1949, in Jamestown, North Dakota, to Helen (Schafer) and Martin Erhart. In 1966, he proudly enlisted in the United States Navy. While serving, he formed a close friendship with Monte Brandner. During a leave, Mike visited Monte's family - a visit that would forever change his life, as it was then he met the love of his life, Mary (Monte's sister).
After two years of honorable service, Mike returned to North Dakota and began working for Dakota Steel. He married Mary Brandner on August 14, 1971, and later that year, the couple moved to Rapid City, South Dakota. Mike joined the Rapid City Fire Department, where he served with dedication and pride for 20 years. His firefighting career was tragically cut short in 1991 due to injuries sustained in a fire -forcing him into early retirement from a profession he deeply loved.
A passionate outdoorsman, Mike was affectionately known as the "fishing legend" of Angostura Reservoir. In 2012, he and Mary fulfilled a longtime dream by purchasing a lake house overlooking Angostura, where he spent countless cherished hours fishing with his family and friends.
Mike is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Mary Erhart; his four children: Michelle Ruiz (Rolo), Janelle Scherr (Jerry), Nicole Dahlenburg (Tory), and Michael Erhart (Lindsey); and seven grandchildren: Brianna Bernot (David), Caitlyn Dahlenburg, Carson Dahlenburg, Lucas Erhart, Brady Erhart, Finley Erhart, and Alex Ruiz. He also leaves behind one great grandchild, Beckett Bernot; his brothers, Pat Erhart and Terry Erhart; sister-in-law Shirley Erhart; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Helen Erhart; his sister, Patty Ann; his brother, Jerry Erhart; and his infant _grandson, Andrew Ruiz.
Pallbearers: Michael Erhart, Lucas Erhart, Brady Erhart, Pat Erhart, Terry Erhart, and Carson Dahlenburg
Honorary Pallbearers: Brianna, David, and Beckett Bernot; Caitlyn Dahlenburg; Finley Erhart; and Alex Ruiz
