FORT PIERRE - Michael P. "Jack" DeFea, 82, Fort Pierre and formerly of Rapid City, died Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at St. Mary's Hospital. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Rose (Petriella) DeFea, Fort Pierre; his son, Michael A. DeFea, Pierre; his daughter, Lisa Magorien, and son-in-law, Lyle Magorien, Pierre; three grandchildren, Kara Lamport, Aberdeen, and Danielle and Shelby Magorien, both of Pierre; and one sister, Patricia Perrett, Pueblo West, CO. He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, James DeFea. Michael was born June 1, 1926, in Wheaton, MN to Michael and Clara (Paterson) DeFea. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946. Upon his honorable discharge, he attended the University of Notre Dame, graduating in 1950. Upon graduation he then returned to Milbank, where he joined the family owned and operated DeFea Theater and Drive Inn. Michael married Rose Petriella August 27, 1949 in Elkhart, IN. They made their home in Milbank, where in 1960 Michael and his brother James began an agency for American Family Insurance. In 1966, Michael was promoted to district manager and the family moved to Rapid City, retiring from the company in 1988. During retirement he kept busy working for the U.S. Office of Personnel Management administering civil service tests. Michael and Rose moved to Fort Pierre in 2005 to be closer to their children. Michael was a faithful member of the Catholic Church, an avid fan of the "Fighting Irish of Notre Dame," and loved classic Hollywood movies. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. CDT, with a 5:30 p.m. rosary, Friday, March 27, at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, March 30, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cathedral in Rapid City. Burial will be at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established.
