Obituary

Mike Volk, 75, died November 11th 2013, in Phoenix, AZ. He was born July 20, 1938, in Strasburg, ND, to August and Elizabeth (Schwahn) Volk. At the age of 3, his family moved to Dupree, SD where they lived until 1947 when they moved to Hardin, MT. Mike attended St. Xavier Mission School in St. Xavier, MT. In 1955 he enlisted in the USAF and completed basic training at Parks AFB in California. This enlistment led him to areas overseas including a stay in Japan. It was there that his love for motorcycles was ignited. Upon returning stateside and being stationed at Ellsworth AFB he met the true love of his life. On May 27, 1960, he married Mary Ellen Sullivan in Newcastle, WY. They lived in Rapid City where he worked as an expert mechanic, either at one of several full-service stations he owned or at businesses such as Thomas Oldsmobile, Cadillac & GMC, Otto's Service Center, and D&F Diesel. In 1995, he moved to Arizona where he worked for Arizona Campers & Trailers until his illness. His children remember, Dad had several talents. Of course he could fix anything, but he also had a great love of music and could be regularly found playing music and singing, with his band The Sounds of Country, for people at bars, honky-tonks, and various veterans' lodges in and around the Rapid City area. Second only to his love for his wife and family, Dad loved to ride motorcycles and never missed going to Sturgis in August. He was a long-time member of the Jackpine Gypsies, and the 2013 rally was his 54th rally; a record he was proud of. He was happiest when on his Harley, riding with family and friends (always in the lead), stopping often for a cold one and sharing a laugh.' Mike is survived by three sons and one daughter: Steven (Jennifer) Volk of Rapid City, Kimberly (Dennis) McDonald of Monument, CO, Richard (Lenora) Volk of Phoenix, AZ and Jeffery (Shannon) Volk of Melbourne, FL, 11 grandchildren (Terra, Christy, Alicia, Mike, Erik, Kevin, Kyle, Travis, Meghan, Brittany and Katie), 10 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Marge Power of Hardin, MT and Betty Summerfelt of Forsyth, MT and a brother Bob Volk of LaCanada, CA. He very much appreciated the close friendship of Steve and Ardean Dippert, Jim Bridges, Bob Moore and all of his ridding buddies. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, parents, one sister, and three brothers. Visitation will be from 5 PM to 7 PM, Sunday, November 17th at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home in Rapid City with a Wake and Rosary Service at 7 PM. Catholic Funeral Mass will be at 10 AM, Monday, November 18th at the Immaculate Conception Chapel in Rapid City with Rev. Bill Zandri officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Rapid City, SD with Military Graveside Services performed by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and Ellsworth Air Force 28th Bomb Wing Honor Guard.
