Obituary

RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA--Mildred Ingersoll Hopkins, 87, of Raleigh, died February 26, 2008, in Raleigh. Mildred was born June 12, 1920 in Everett, Massachusetts to Lawrence Russell and Gertrude Callahan Ingersoll. Mildred was raised in the Boston, MA, area and graduated from Everett High School in 1938. She pursued her love of travel while working for the Department of the Navy, sailing to Germany in 1947. She met her husband Jim, an Air Force pilot there. After five children, several moves, and countless friendships made, they retired to Hominy, OK, where Jim served as mayor and Mildred as editor of the local paper. They worked together during summers at Mount Rushmore National Park until Jims death in 1987. Mildred joined FEMA in the early eighties serving as a Public Information Officer and Congressional liaison in multiple disasters nation-wide earning her the nickname of Hurricane Mildred. She worked her last disaster at the age of 80. Mildred won the honor of Top Press Woman of Texas in 1972. One of her proudest moments was singing with her church choir in Rome for Pope John Paul II in 1998. She moved to Raleigh in 1999 and became a member of the Whitaker Mill Senior Center and Sacred Heart Cathedral Catholic Church, as well as a loyal shopper at Crabtree Mall. She was often seen at Cameron Village and K&S Cafeteria, where she was well known for her hats and quick smile. Mildreds love of writing led to the creative writing class at Whitaker Mill Senior Center. Under her tutelage, a book was published with her students writings. Mildred also authored a childrens book Faces in Stone about the carving of Mount Rushmore. Mildred is survived by her children, James Hopkins and his wife, Terry of Sandpoint, ID; John Hopkins and his wife, Donna of Washington, DC; Dan Hopkins and his wife, Sue of Dallas, TX; Deborah Duckwall and her husband, Lease of Abilene, KS; and Barbara Coram of Clayton; sisters, Betty Ballou of Myrtle Beach, SC; Brenda Helmey of Savannah, GA; Phyllis Hobbs of Woodstock, VA; and June Shelton of Sugar Creek, MO; 8 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 39 years, Jim Hopkins; as well as her sisters, Carol Bargeron; and Barbara Ertle; and a brother, Russell Ingersoll. Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 4:00 pm today, Monday, March 3, at Sacred Heart Cathedral Catholic Church, 219 W. Edenton Street, Raleigh, NC. Interment will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, March 5 at Black Hills National Cemetery. Friends and family may gather for a procession to the cemetery at 9:15 a.m. leaving from the Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home in Rapid City. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mildred Ingersoll Hopkins Scholarship Fund, c/o Sacred Heart Cathedral Catholic Church School, 204 Hillsborough Street, Raleigh, NC 27603. Arrangements are with Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Raleigh and Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home in Rapid City.
