Obituary

Mitchell E. "Mick" Mudlin, 87, of Rapid City died on Tuesday, June 29, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Center of New Underwood.

Mitchell E. "Mick" Mudlin was born Feb. 15, 1929, in Crookston, NE, to Samuel and Josephine Mudlin. When he was 16 he took the train to Rapid City to start a job at Swander's Bakery. He worked at Swander's Bakery for 6-1/2 years. In the spring of 1951, he drove a gravel truck hauling gravel to Ellsworth as they were building runways and base housing.

Mitchell married the love of his life, Darlene Stoll of Piedmont in March 1951. In October he started working at Lariat Clothiers in Rapid City. Mick had been showing signs of diabetes that summer and in November, went into the hospital for treatment. Diabetes would be a struggle for him the rest of his life.

Mick was named manager of the Lariat Clothiers in September 1956. The western clothing store was a downtown Rapid City landmark and his life passion. He was one of the first businessmen to produce live commercials on KOTA TV in the 1950's. Some will remember his store slogan of: "One Thousand Boots on Display at all Times." He bought the Lariat in 1974 and moved the store to the old Becker Drug building on Main Street in 1975.

Three weeks before the 1972 flood, Mick bought the Tip Top Motel in downtown Rapid City with two partners and ended up owning the motel in 2001.

Because of health reasons, Mick closed his beloved Lariat Clothiers in 1985 and closed his eastside store in December 1986. Over the many years the Lariat Clothiers was in business, Mick's customers became lifelong friends and employees were like family.

Mick was an avid bowler and loved playing cards with his friends. He was a lifetime Elks member. Mick and Darlene loved to travel in their motorhome and did so often to see family and friends. Mick was a devoted family man to his six children and very generous to his extended family members.

Mick is survived by his wife, Darlene of Rapid City; daughter, Ann (Don) Hamm, Rapid City; five sons: Sam, Piedmont; Bob (Sheila), Rapid City; Kevin (Geri), Elko, NV; Mark (Mardell), Elko, NV; Joe, Marysville, WA; 15 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mick was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Ann, Virginia and Lucille; two brothers, Patrick and Lloyd; and three grandsons, Mason and Matthew Mudlin and Jonathan Hamm.

A memorial has been established with Make -A- Wish South Dakota Foundation in honor of his grandson, Mason.
