Monica Mellen Burgess, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, business leader, and community champion, passed peacefully into the kingdom of heaven to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was 72 years old.

Born on December 15, 1953, in Newark, NJ Monica was the daughter of Gregory Edward Mellen and Alice Eleanor Dooling Mellen. In 1957, her family relocated to Bloomington, MN where Monica’s exceptional intellect quickly became evident. She graduated from Lincoln High School at just 16 years old, a remarkable achievement that foreshadowed a life defined by intelligence, determination, and excellence.

Monica continued her education at Macalester College, graduating with honors with a degree in Chemistry. Following college, she began her professional career at 3M through its Riker Labs division, where she started building a career that would place her at the forefront of technological innovation.

Guided in part by her father Greg, Monica later joined Unisys, where she helped engineer some of the largest mainframe computers of the era. As technology evolved, so did Monica. She transitioned into the personal computer division in San Jose, CA where she managed a manufacturing plant and further established herself as a highly respected leader in the technology industry.

Monica met Jim Burgess at the Minnesota State Fair—a chance encounter that almost never happened, as Jim had not planned to attend and only went at the urging of friends. That decision changed both of their lives forever. The two married in 1990, building a life centered on family, love, and shared purpose.

While Monica’s professional accomplishments were extraordinary, some of her greatest joys were found on the water. She loved boating on the St. Croix River, where many of her happiest memories were made. Their shared love of boating became one of the foundations of Monica and Jim’s relationship and remained a treasured part of their life together.

In 1994, Monica joined Dell Technologies as an Executive Director overseeing operations across the Americas, where she worked closely with Michael Dell. Her leadership, vision, and technical expertise made a lasting impact on those fortunate enough to collaborate with her. She retired in 2002, beginning a new chapter when she and her family relocated to Rapid City, SD where Monica became a partner in Black Hills Harley-Davidson.

Monica was also deeply involved with the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, serving as an active officer in a flotilla based in Saint Paul. Her love of boats was matched by her mechanical confidence and willingness to tackle any challenge. Jim often recalled one of his favorite memories with admiration and affection: “Monica could crawl down into the engine compartment and change all 16 spark plugs and the oil.” It was a perfect reflection of who she was—brilliant, fearless, practical, and never intimidated by hard work.

In 2020, Monica’s son Nick met Sasha, who would soon become a cherished part of the family. They were married a year later, and a few years after that, Monica welcomed one of her greatest joys—her grandson, Ryker.

Becoming a grandmother brought Monica immense joy. She treasured the opportunity to build a special bond with Ryker, especially during a difficult season that allowed Monica and Jim precious time helping care for him. Those moments together became deeply precious, creating memories filled with love, laughter, and connection. Ryker brought tremendous joy to Monica’s life, and the time they shared became one of her most treasured gifts.

Retirement did not slow Monica—it simply redirected her energy toward serving others. In 2008, recognizing the need to strengthen and expand opportunities for athletes with intellectual disabilities in Rapid City, SD Monica became a driving force in reimagining the local Special Olympics South Dakota program. Alongside Jason Alley, Dr. Mark Harlow, Jack Lynass, Steve Schacht, Stacey Fenske (Schaefer), Myles Kennedy, Tammy Barrows, and Lillie Pendleton, she helped create the Rapid City Flame, bringing renewed vision, leadership, and mission to the organization.

As Board Chair of Special Olympics South Dakota, Monica’s leadership transformed possibilities into realities. She spearheaded the creation of the state’s largest bocce complex, partnering with Rusty Wallace and the NASCAR Foundation, along with Rod Woodruff of the Buffalo Chip Campground, to raise the funds needed for construction. Her vision created a legacy that will benefit athletes and families for generations.

Monica’s brilliance extended beyond business and nonprofit leadership. She was also instrumental in the development and design of augmentative communication devices, contributing to some of the earliest applications of predictive text technology—innovation that helped give voice and connection to countless individuals.

Monica lived a life of extraordinary achievement, but those who knew her best will remember more than her accomplishments. They will remember her sharp mind, adventurous spirit, determination, generous heart, and unwavering commitment to making things better—whether for her family, her community, or complete strangers whose lives she improved without seeking recognition.

As a young adult, Monica found joy in music and enjoyed playing the cello, where discipline and artistry came together in ways that reflected her character. Years later, that same love of music became part of her spiritual journey as she helped provide music for Taizé contemplative worship. In that community, she found prayer, reflection, and quiet connection. Monica also valued spiritual growth deeply and worked with a spiritual director in the Christian faith, intentionally nurturing a life of contemplation, discernment, and grace. These practices reflected the thoughtful and grounded spirit that guided how she lived, loved, and served others.

She is survived by her loving husband, Jim; sons Nick (Sasha) and Andrew; cherished grandson Ryker; brother Mike (Barb); sisters Roberta and Martha; mother-in-law Maxine; brothers-in-law Scott and Todd (Jill); and sisters-in-law Susan (Dan), Jane (John), and Carol.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Alice and Greg; her brother, Neal; and her father-in-law, Barry.

Monica’s life was a testament to what is possible when brilliance is paired with purpose and success is measured by service to others. She leaves behind a remarkable legacy of innovation, leadership, love, and faith—one that will continue to inspire all who knew her.

She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Service will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church (the Cathedral) at 10:30 am Friday June 26, 2026
