RAPID CITY – Murray James "Jim" Tobin, 97, passed away on Friday, December 30, 2022.
Jim was born on the family farm in June of 1925. Throughout his school years he worked farms in the Pierpont-Langford area. His main sport was basketball which he played through his Junior year. Jim's dad moved the family to Seattle, WA in 1941 which is where he did his Senior year of high school graduating in 1942.
Jim joined the Marines at 17 years of age in February of 1943. His mother had to sign the paperwork. During WWII he saw 40 of the 48 states. He spent six months at Navy Pier in Chicago. While in Chicago, he met his future wife, Rosemary Perciabosco.
After the war ended, he returned to Chicago and married Rosemary on July 4, 1946. Jim often joked about losing his independence on Independence Day. Later, Jim earned a degree in Accounting from DePaul University in Chicago.
Eventually, Jim landed a job with The Norris Grain Company which brought him and his growing family to Rapid City, SD in 1952. Jim managed multiple cattle ranches covering a half a million acres in Western South Dakota.
Through no fault of his own, Jim lost his dream job and landed a job with Hardco Inc. as manager for the wholesale hardware and flooring company. Eventually he became a partner. Jim did have several other business interests over the years.
Jim and Rosemary had three children; Timothy, Janice and Kevin.
Jim was an avid hunter and fisherman his whole life. He also loved to garden.
