Rapid City
Nadine Antoinette Kverne Merchen Warren, age 84, of Rapid City, formerly of New Underwood, passed away on Sunday, August 2, 2026. Born on January 3, 1942, in Clarke, South Dakota, to Palmer A and Irene A (Paulsen) Kverne. Nadine shared her early years with her sister Deborah Ann and cherished the memory of her brother, Palmer Jr., who passed away in infancy.
Nadine's journeys took her many places from Hot Springs and Rapid City, SD to Colorado where she completed her education and graduated from beauty school.
She met and married Donald D. Merchen, beginning a family and building a life. After a devastating fire, the family moved to New Underwood, where she opened a beauty shop then eventually an Arcade for the local youth that became a community hub.
Her dedication extended beyond business; she was a devoted supporter of youth sports, managing concession stands and serving her community as an EMT for the New Underwood ambulance service. Although health challenges later required her to close her shop, Nadine continued to contribute to her community through work at the Wasta Rest Area and the New Underwood Good Samaritan Nursing Home. She lived in Deadwood hosting and managing restaurants then had the opportunity to run a restaurant in WY. She eventually went back to Huron, SD to work, take care of her aunt and even joined a bowling league.
Nadine kept her life full of joy in her roles as wife and mother. She married her second husband, Don Warren. Together, they embraced the outdoors through fishing and camping adventures. Her resilience shone through the trials of dementia, leading her to spend her later years at Avantara North Nursing Home.
She leaves behind a legacy of love through her extended family: daughter Vicki Volmer of Owanka SD, grandchildren Candy (Brant) Wilcox, Kyle (Kristy) Volmer, and Wyatt (Stephanie) Volmer, daughter Kerri (Clinton) Smith, of New Underwood SD, grandchildren Brandon Smith, Emily (Butch) Hamling, Devin (Jake) Scott, and Travis Smith, daughter Wendi (Jeff) Roberts of Fort Pierre SD, grandchildren Lacey Roberts, BreeAnna (TY) Thompson, and Cord Roberts, son Chad (Tammy) Merchen of Rapid City SD, grandchildren Levi (Brandie) Merchen, Colby (Ashli) Merchen, Madeline (Lee) Kolbeck and Donivan (Taylor) Merchen, daughter Kristi (Clayton) Lemke of New Underwood SD grandchildren Dusty (Elee) Merchen; 28 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, brother-in law Buddy (Noyes) Collins and Norma DiBartolo from Colchester CT, grandniece Colette (Richard) Holmes children Skylar and Brynn, grandniece Tamarah (Nick) Fisher, child Layla.
She was preceded in death by her parents, beloved spouses, brother Palmer Kverne Jr., sister Deborah Collins, son-in-Law Rod Volmer, grandchild Clay Lemke and Jay J. Volmer.
