Obituary

Nathan Allen Readd died on Monday, March 8, 2021, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.  He was born in Thomas, WV, on August 10, 1938. The youngest of eight siblings, Nathan started to regularly walk to the Presbyterian church in a nearby town when he was around seven years old. He liked to joke that he was motivated by his interest in the pastor's teenage daughter. Her kindness won his heart, and then Christ did.

At 17, Nathan joined the Air Force and was trained as a radar technician, eventually working at sites around the world. He was eventually stationed in Sundance, WY, where he met his wife, Beverly, an employee at the county hospital. Their first date was on Valentine's Day, 1965—the two were married May 19. After three years in Wyoming, Nathan and Beverly moved to Ohio, then Cape Cod, MA. When his youngest daughter was six weeks old, Nathan was deployed to Vietnam. After being injured, an explosion at the hospital where he was being treated led to a two-and-a-half-month period in which he was Missing In Action.

After his return from the war, Nathan served in northern California, then North Bend, OR, where he led church for little kids. Nathan retired from the Air Force in 1977 and moved to Rapid City, SD on Christmas Day. He had served for twenty years, and earned a Bronze Star for his sacrifice. In Rapid City, he worked for Control Data until his retirement in 2002.  A foster father for eleven years, Nathan had great love for children. He loved to play with and tease his kids, showing them magic tricks. Nathan said that the greatest feeling was holding a baby, and was the proud dad of two daughters, two sons, thirteen grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by both of his parents and his seven siblings.
