BUFFALO GAP | Nellie Zona Cuny passed away peacefully May 31, 2014, at Black Hills Golden Living Center, surrounded in the loving arms of all her children and sister. Nellie was born July 13, 1923, in Pine Ridge to Ray and Thetna (Hudspeth) Yeager. She married Sidney Cuny on July 11, 1942. They started their lives together in Santa Ana, CA, where Sidney was stationed. They moved back to South Dakota (home) to raise their family and start a ranch. After Sidney passed away, Nellie went on ranching and could be found checking cows in her little yellow pickup. With the gift of caring and helping people, Nellie was awarded The Good Neighbors award in 2005. Nellie's love for having a house full of family led to her to becoming a foster parent to many children who she then became their loving mother for life. Nellie was well known for her awesome cooking at Red Cloud School, Shannon County Schools, and building of the well-known Cuny Table Café, in which feeding and meeting people made her day. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Buffington (Don, deceased), Redshirt Table; three sons, Marvin (Minnie) Cuny, Hermosa, Allen (Janie) Cuny, Cuny Table, and Don (Elizabeth) Garcia, Rapid City; 17 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary McGaa, Rapid City. She was preceded in death by Mother and Father; her husband Sidney; sisters, Edna, Ruth, and Freda; a son, Thomas Cuny; son-in-law, Don Buffington; daughter-in-law, Fracine Garcia; and two grandchildren, Tomi Cuny and Don Garica Jr. Rosary services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 5, at the Rockyford School Gym. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday, June 6, at the Rockyford School Gym. Burial will follow at the Cuny Table Cemetery.
