Norine L. Carswell, 98, of Rapid City, died Saturday, March 3, 2018 at a local nursing home.
She was born in a sod hut on March 30, 1919 near Cedar Canyon, South Dakota to Edward and Theresa (Trankelbach) Janke. Norine grew up on the prairie, eventually moving to northwest of Newell, graduating from Faith High School. She attended Black Hills College from 1936 – 1937, earning a teaching certificate. She met Alexander Carswell at college and they married in Newell on December 23, 1941.
Norine taught school in Newell, the Sturgis school system and in 1948 the family moved to Rapid City where she taught 3rd grade until retiring in 1976. In 1967 she earned a B.S. Degree in Education from Black Hills State.
Norine and Alexander wintered in Mesa, AZ for a few years.
Alexander passed away in 1993.
She is survived by her children; Larry (Carol) Carswell, Venice, FL and Nancy (Kenny) Meisner, Rapid City, 3 grandchildren; Tammy (Jeremie) Meisner-Moore, Kim (Kevin) Burke, all of Rapid City and Cathy (John) Collins, Washington, DC, great grandchildren; Toby Moore, Samantha Moore, Luke Burke, Quinn Burke and Claire Collins, 3 sisters; Alma Laumer, Lennox, Betty Dahlberg, The Dalles, OR and Lola (Kenneth) Pascoe, Spearfish.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, March 7, 2018, at Westminster Presbyterian Church.
A visitation will be held one hour prior to service time at the church.
Interment will be at Black Hills National Cemetery.
Memorials have been established to Meals on Wheels and the NAJA Shrine Travel Fund.
