Obituary

Norma T. Jacobson, 79, Rapid City, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008 at Raid City Regional Hospital. She was born December 13, 1928 in Draper, SD. to Fred and Maggie Bauman. Norma married at age 16 in Pierre, and was a mother at 17. She and her family lived in rural Buffalo Gap, then moved to New Underwood. Their last move was to Farmingdale where they lived until the untimely death of her husband, Leonard at age 35 on Nov. 9, 1956. She then moved with her daughter, Linda and step-daughter, Evelyn to Rapid City. She worked as a lab technician at St. Johns McNamara Hospital for a number of years until she and a partner purchased Rose Huntington Childrens Shop on St. Joe St which they operated for several years. Her final employment was with J. C. Penny Co. where she worked for 36 years, retiring in 1991. To celebrate her retirement she and daughter, Linda toured the islands of Hawaii for three weeks. Norma married Richard (Jake) Jacobson, June 16, 1974. During their life together, she was active in the VFW Auxiliary, attended Jakes Navy ship reunions, toured many Civil War battlefields, and visited friends and family throughout the U.S. She collected angels, white mice and ceramic shoes and enjoyed attending auctions, estate sales and garage sales. Her artistic talent was expressed in the beautiful greeting cards she created for all occasions. In the winter she worked jigsaw puzzles and summers were devoted to her flower and vegetable gardens. At age 24, rheumatic fever damaged the mitral valve in her heart. In 1985 she had open heart surgery at Dallas, TX to repair the valve and then again in 2003 to replace the mitral valve. In 2007 she was diagnosed with Lymphedema and this August she fell with a compression fracture to her lower back. At age 25, a heart specialist told her she would be a semi-invalid for the rest of her life and her lifespan would be short. However, her strength, courage and determination to live a full and rich life enjoying her many activities, friends and family overcame the diagnosis and she lived 79 years, 8 months and 13 days before her heart took its last and final beat at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2008.
