Obituary

RAPID CITY--O. Dale Sayler, 87, died October 8, 2009 after a short battle with cancer. He was a child of the depression who grew up with the world at war. These were defining moments that help shape the man who was known for his warmth and infectious friendship O. Dale Sayler was born June 13 1922 in Rapid City. He was the only child of Millie Edzards Sayler and the second child of Orval Sayler. Dale graduated from Rapid City High School in 1939. Dale was a lifelong resident of Rapid City except for time away with the Army, training in Iowa and being assigned to the Pacific during WWII, along with time spent in college in Des Moines, Iowa. It was in Des Moines where he met Lois Jenkins who became his wife of 61 years. WWII had Dale hopping across the Pacific with the Army Signal Corp. Dale spent time in Japan with the Occupational forces. After the war Dale returned to Des Moines to attend Drake University where he received a Bachelor of Commercial Science degree in 1949. After graduating Dale began working as a Revenue Agent for the Treasury Department. There was an insistent desire to return to his hometown, which lead Dale back to Rapid City where he began working for Harold Hime CPA. While working with Hime in the early 1950s Dale met another young CPA, Bud Thorstenson, who with Dale, joined Nick Schuweiler to create Schuweiler, Sayler, Thorstenson and Company CPAs. This accounting practice became Sayler, Thorstenson and Company CPAs, a firm that remains an institution today. Dale retired from the accounting firm in 1981. Dale had a number of business ventures in and around the community. In the early 60s Dale and Ed Dull created DuEll Sporting goods a retail store that operated for nearly thirty years. Late in the 60s Dale and Ray Aldridge formed a group that purchased a McDonalds in Casper Wyoming. In 1978 Dale purchased Black Hill Refuse Service, which he operated until he retired in 1985. Dale and Lois loved to travel and were able to visit numerous sites in Asia, Africa, Europe, and Australia along with multiple visits to each state and the provinces of Canada. Dale was an avid pilot who loved to fly. He was rated to fly single and multi engine planes. In addition to planes Dale was certified as a competitive tournament boat driver. The Signal Corp experience of working with radios became a passion that continued for decades. He was a licensed Amateur Radio operator who regularly spoke with other radio operators around the world. Dale loved his community and the friendships and bonds that developed. You would find Dale every Sunday at the First Presbyterian Church. He had a strong bond with the Masons and Shrine Club. He was honored to be a past Master of the Lodge along with being a past President of the Shrine Club. He was active in the Shrine Air Patrol, the Najacks, the Santa Clause Unit and the Jesters. Dales civic involvement included being a member of the Airport Board, Ellsworth Heritage Foundation, the Humane Society, the Mt Rushmore Society, and participating with numerous functions and groups of the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce. He was an active member of the Cosmopolitan Club for nearly 40 years. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Clifford, his father Orval, his sister Ocia, his mother Millie, and his beloved wife Lois. Dale is survived by his children Susan, Larry and his wife Doreen, Cheryl, and his three grandchildren Teresa, Matt and Kevin. Four grand dogs and five grand cats. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-7 PM at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1:00 PM at the First Presbyterian Church in Rapid City. Burial will be at Mt View Cemetery with Military honors. Memorials have been established for the Shriners Childrens Hospital and Hospice of the Hills.
