Obituary

Orland Duane Paulsen, age 92, passed away Monday February 7, 2022 at Westhills Village Healthcare Center.

Orland was born December 28, 1929 to Andrew & Etta (Mork) Paulsen in Irene, South Dakota.  He graduated from Irene High School in 1947. He married Mary Lou Manzel on September 16, 1951. He was drafted and served in the US Army from 1951 to 1953 and then served 6 years in the Army Reserve.  He attended National of Business in Rapid City graduating in 1956 with a degree in business and accounting.  He was employed by Sorenson, Dunmire & Short CPA's after graduation. He passed his CPA exam in 1961.  He served as president of the SD Society of CPA's in 1973-74. He retired from Dunmire, Short, Tobias & Paulsen.

Orland was active in many civic, professional & service organizations over the years. He was a member of the Rapid City Lions Club for 65 years, with perfect attendance.  He served as Chairman of the Council of Governors (covering SD, ND, & Saskatchewan, Canada) in 1983-84. He received many awards in Lionism, including Lion of the Year, Melvin Jones Fellow, International Presidents medal and was voted to the SD Lions Hall of Fame in 2003. Orland was also an avid snowmobiler and spent many hours with his family and friends snowmobiling in the Black Hills. He was part of a group that rode across the state of SD. He served on the Governor's Advisory Council for the SD snowmobile trail system for 25 years. He was elected to the SD Snowmobile Hall of Fame in 2004.

Orland was elected to the Pennington County Commissioners where he served for 5 years. He was elected as President of the SD Association of County Commissioners in 1998. He was a member of the Elks Lodge #1187 and a life-member of the NRA. He also coached little league baseball while his sons Jeff & Scott were participating. He loved the outdoors and spent many hours hunting, fishing, camping, waterskiing, snowmobiling and golfing. Orland & Mary Lou joined Calvary Lutheran Church in 1959 where Orland served as Treasurer & Council in the 1960's.

Orland is survived by his wife Mary Lou and three children; Candace Paulsen-Pitz (Steve), Jeffrey (Laurie), and Scott (Michele); three grandchildren, Whitney Buck (Justin), Clayton Pitz (Megan Peters), Taylor Paulsen, three great-grandchildren; Odin Pitz, Annalise Taylor, and Dashiell Buck. He was preceded in death by his parents Andrew & Etta Paulsen and his brother Veryl.

Memorial Service will be held at 2:30 pm Friday, February 11, 2022 at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD with full Military Honors.
