RAPID CITY- Owen C. Johnson, 87, died on November 15, 2017 at home in Rapid City.
He was born August 29, 1930 in Rapid City, the son of Oscar and Carrie Johnson. He attended grade school in Hermosa and graduated from Rapid City High School in 1948. He attended Black Hills Teachers College in Spearfish and served in the US Navy from 1950 to 1956.
After his Navy service and college, Owen worked for the First National Bank of the Black Hills from 1957-1973. He then purchased an insurance agency in Hill City from which he retired in 1993. He was active in Hill City community affairs, being president of the Chamber of Commerce, a 50 year member of the Masonic Fraternity, and past member of Naja Shrine, Flag Unit, NAJA Ts, and the Jesters.
He married his beautiful wife, Beverly, in 1984. For many years Owen and Bev spent winters in Texas as they loved the warm weather.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bev; his parents; sons Bruce and Thomas; and sister Loraine Aalseth.
He is survived by his three daughters, Susan Bendel, Cheryl Johnson, and Karen Shuck; four step-children, Tina Ball, Twila Morris, Travis Crisman, and Tamela Ross; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services (including Masonic rites) will be held at Osheim and Schmidt Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 21st at 10:00 a.m. with Chaplain (Ret.) Herb B. Cleveland officiating.
Private family inurnment will take place at Black Hill National Cemetery near Sturgis with military honors provided by the Rushmore VFW Post 1273 and the US Navy Honor Guard.
