Obituary

STURGIS - Pat A. Tines, 81, Sturgis, fought a courageous 8-year battle from a life altering stroke and passed away Monday Jan 5, 2026, at Monument Health Sturgis Hospital.

Pat was born December 6, 1944, in Rapid City, SD, the oldest child of Wayne and Effie Sherwood.

Early in Pat's childhood her family moved to Draper, SD where she attended high school and married Benny Lee Schmidt. She lived a very full life raising two children, living and working on several farms and ranches all over the West River area.  The family eventually settled in the Rapid Valley area.  As an extremely energetic woman she taught her children the meaning and fulfillment of hard work and self-determination.  Pat was a survivor and warrior in support of her family and friends.  She worked for Monument Health in several key jobs for over 20 years and later in life she married Jack Tines and moved to the farm in Owanka, South Dakota until his passing in 2008.  Pat suffered a debilitating stroke in September 2017 and spent her remaining years in the Monument Health Sturgis Nursing Home where she never wavered from her faith and tirelessly worked to regain full mobility.  Mel Glassie was her constant companion and coach during her life at the Nursing Home.  She also received enthusiastic encouragement and support from her closest niece Yalonda (Lonnie) Pace.

Survivors include her long-term partner Mel Klasi of Rapid City, South Dakota; sons, Scott (Michelle) Schmidt, Duncan, South Carolina; Todd (Cathy) Schmidt, Piedmont, South Dakota; two grandchildren, Paul (Michelle) Schmidt, Clovis New Mexico; Nicholas Schmidt, Duncan, South Carolina; and two great grandchildren, Kade and Hadley Schmidt, Clovis, New Mexico.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Ron Sherwood and her husbands, Benny Lee Schmidt and Jack Tines.
