Pat was born in Faulkton, South Dakota as the youngest of 3 boys. After the early death of their parents, the boys were raised apart. Pat went to live with Arnold and Tillie Martinmaas, their son Jim and daughter JoAnne. He grew up with farming, ranching, fishing, and hunting as part of his life. After graduating from Faulkton High School, Pat was in the National Guard, and then made the un-typical decision of men in that part of the country and in that era to go to Stewart's Beauty School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Deep, long-lasting friendships were formed there, and Pat took the next step to sell beauty supplies in order to understand the business and the salons in the state. He decided on Rapid City as his first place to practice behind the chair. It was there that he met Barb Braden, and the rest was a beautiful history of 58 years together, operating businesses, raising their family, and living a full life together and in community. Summers included ball games, boating, fishing, and camping with friends. Family vacations were done in a pick-up camper, fifth-wheel trailer, or a Winnebago motorhome, to California, Canada, and Seattle. Trips to Las Vegas and Hawaii were part of professional gatherings in the hairdressing field.
Along the way, in addition to building and opening Mr. Patrick's Styling Salon, Pat competed in and won state competitions for hair cutting, remodeled and opened Black Hills Beauty College, partnered in opening two fast food franchises, was a partner in a local casino, and partnered in the development of land along the Missouri river north of Pierre. He coached girls' softball, golfed, hunted, fished, and along with Barb, they were snowbirds in Apache Junction and Gold Canyon, Arizona.
Pat was known as a good friend, someone who could fix almost anything, a wise teacher, a loving father, a patient caregiver, a warm and kind man, and a devoted husband. In her later years, Barb would often say "We are so lucky to have him" when he would walk out of the room. Yes, Mom, we certainly were.
Pat was preceded in death by his father Sylvester, his mother Lucille, his brothers George and Rob, his son John, and his wife Barb, along with members of the Martinmaas family whom he grew up with after the death of his parents. Pat is survived by his daughters Teresa (Francis) Jahner of Rapid City, Shannan Tanner of Westminster, CO, granddaughter Darienne Jahner of Rapid City, numerous nieces and nephews and their families in South Dakota and Minnesota, friends who were like family, and many people whose lives he touched during his 84 years here.
