IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Patsy Sue
Bryan
July 15, 1932 – November 5, 2018
RAPID CITY- Patsy Sue Bryan, 86, passed away quietly surrounded by family on Monday, Nov 5th 2018. Her passing may have been quiet, but she lived life vigorously. The hole that she's left in our hearts and lives will take time and love to heal.
Patsy was born July 15, 1932, in Buckner, Missouri, in what her uncle called "the first mobile home ever built." Her parents, Mary and William Cusick, were, at the time, living with her sister, Leota, and her husband, Harold Custis, in the sleeping quarters on the back of a 1-ton truck, so the families could be together as they traveled for work. The Custis's opened their home and hearts to Patsy and Mary, and their love and influence helped to mold her early childhood.
William Cusick worked with the REA putting up electrical cold lines and substations throughout the Midwest and into the East Coast. Patsy grew up learning to make friends quickly and enjoying life for what it was. She went to 5 different schools in one year.
Following her parents' divorce, family ties brought Patsy and her mother to Wall, South Dakota, at the age of 11 or 12. She met her husband, Matt Benson Bryan, in her last year of high school, and they were married in Mile City, Montana, on Jan 23, 1951. The newlyweds lived with Matt's parents, Annie and Marien Bryan, for several years until they moved to the original family farm. Eventually, the combination of bad insulation, cold weather, and small children caused them to move back to the house Matt's parents had vacated, where they lived for the next 28 years until the Bryan family sold the farm when Matt's parents passed.
Patsy loved the farm and all the animals that populated their home during those years. Of all of her homes, this was her favorite. Matt and Patsy moved to Rapid City in 1982 and jointly owned The Rolling Pin Bakery in Baken Park with Matt's brother and wife, Eldon and Betty Bryan. After Matt's death in 1983, the bakery was sold and she worked for Landstrom's Jewelry. Patsy was always a hard worker and continued working until her retirement in 1992.
Patsy filled her life with laughter, family, friends and her beloved pets. Maybe it was her early years of moving that made everyone her friend whether she knew them 5 minutes or 5 years. She loved telling funny stories about herself and her family, and would laugh until tears ran down her face.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Stacey (David) Jackson of Villa Park, CA, Michael Bryan of Rapid City, Cathy (Curtis) Schmidtlein of Hermosa, SD, Tammie (Gale) Crown of Wall, SD, and two half-sisters, Linda (Mark) Roylance of American Fork, UT, and Dianna (Victor) McCune of Verona, MO, as well as a host of grandchildren (15) and great grandchildren (39).
Patsy was and has been a great mother, putting the needs of her children over her own, and truly reflected our Savior in her love and service to them. She will be deeply missed by her children until they join her and their father. May the knowledge of this truth help each of us!
The family of Patsy Bryan would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and the many friends that have cared for her and reached out to Mom during her illness and passing...We have felt your love and have been lifted!
