Obituary

RAPID CITY--Paul Louis Schurger, 81, passed away on August 10, 2009, at Rapid City Regional Hospital Auxiliary Hospice House. He was born on August 20, 1927, to Leslie and Isabel (Felix) Schurger in Rapid City. He was the first son and the third of five children. Paul graduated in 1945 from Rapid City High School and attended St. Thomas Catholic University and SD School of Mines. He was very athletic in high school, lettering in both football and track. Paul enlisted in the US Navy and served as a seaman at the end of World War II. Paul married Mildred Norland in 1949 and together they had four children. Paul had several different professions during his life, but he is perhaps best known for Toscanos Restaurant (formerly on East North Street), which he owned and operated from 1956 to 1978. The business was sold in 1978. Paul then worked for Manor House, a local restaurant supply company. From early on, one of Pauls favorite past-times was hunting and fishing, especially in the Black Hills. He was very adept at route finding and knew the various roads and trails in the Hills like the back of his hand. He was very active in the Izaak Walton League, a conservation organization. For a brief period as a young man, he was a cave guide at the Sitting Bull Crystal Caverns. Paul was a capable handyman as an adult and spent considerable time doing house improvements and remodeling.. Paul was an honest, kind and hardworking husband and father who was loyal to his family. August 9, 2009 marked his 60th wedding anniversary with Millie. He is survived by his wife, Mildred and four children, Rick Schurger (Luanne), Barbara Smith (Dean), Mary Parke, and William Schurger (Ruth), his sister Julie Barton and brother Bob Schurger, four grandchildren, Jocelyn Pearson (Neil), Tony Smith, Chase Smith, Daniel Parke and two great-grandchildren Jonah and Hadely Pearson. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Claire Maron and Jean Chamberlain. Visitation will be Thursday, Aug. 20, from 6 until 7 p.m., with a Christian wake service at 7:00 p.m. at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 14, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help with Father Ed Vanorny presiding. Interment will follow in Black Hills National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Hills.
