Obituary

RAPID CITY | My mother, Pauline Joan Grytness was born Sept. 25, 1927, in Ambrose, ND, to Mr. and Mrs. C.P. Grytness. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon "Bud" Lunde; her parents; and two brothers, Paul A. Grytness (3 years old) and Charles E. Grytness at Guadalcanal in 1942; and a sister, Beatrice G. Lask, who passed away Jan. 28, 2012. She attended USD Vermillion and received a BA degree in Business/Minor Music. Her first teaching assignment was in Canisota, SD, where she taught all business classes, music & drama. She soon went to Washington, DC, where she had the opportunity to be Executive Secretary to Harold Lovre while he was a State Representative for SD. Here she met her husband, Major Vernon "Bud" Lunde on a blind date as he was finishing a tour with the Marines during the Korean conflict. They soon married and moved to Aberdeen, SD, where she gave birth to me, Holly Lunde, and I would be their only child. We moved to Rapid City in 1957, and mother went back to school eventually to receive her teaching degree in Music Education. This started her 40-year career as a grade school music teacher that led to her receiving her Master Degree which resulted in her being the Superintendent of the grade school music teachers. When she retired, she started building a dream of beginning a professional children's chorus for Rapid City, by audition only with Gloria Harrison as director. This idea blossomed into more than 25 years of performing all over the country from Carnegie Hall to Oahu, Hawaii, and many performances for the community of Rapid City. Pauline was actively involved in her home church at Trinity Lutheran for 58 years; serving as Sunday School President, musician, and a faithful member of the adult choir. Besides being Executive Director of the Rapid City Children's Chorus; she served on the Chamber Music Board, the committee for the Performing Arts Center, and member of the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce. She received many awards for her teaching career, civic contributions, and Rapid City Children's Chorus. Pauline touched the lives of many different generations of the citizens of Rapid City. She is survived by her sister, Ardelle G. Machle, New Bern, NC; and many nieces and nephews, Barbara (Don) Neimann, St. Helena, CA, Debbie Murphy, Chicago, IL, Williard Machle III, Bayboro, NC, and Christopher Charles (Maria W.) Machle, Oriental, NC. She has many first cousins around the country, as well as in Norway. She has been close to her great-nieces, Ms. Kristen Murphy, Arlington, VA, Laura (James) Ferri, Bethlehem, PA, and Emma Catherine Machle, Oriental, NC; as well as hundreds of children she has loved and considered family by sharing her love of music. She passed away at her home with me at her side on Jan. 28, 2014. She will be laid to rest at Black Hills National Cemetery by her husband at a private family burial. Please join me in celebrating her beautiful life at a Music Memorial Service at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 3, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Kansas City St., Rapid City, with a reception following. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to either the RCCC or Trinity Lutheran Church.
