Obituary

Peggy Van, long-time resident of Rapid City, passed away on June 27, 2015, at the age of 99, while in the Wayne and Janet Lippold Hospice Suite, Sturgis Regional Hospital, Sturgis, SD. Peggy (Margaret Frances Mazachek) was born June 25, 1916 on the family homestead near Thunderhawk, SD. She attended school in the community for 11 years and completed high school in Platte. Following graduation, she attended the National College of Business in Rapid and then worked 6 years as a secretary with Northwestern Engineering. Peggy met Iral Kenneth Van Schoonhoven and they married May 30, 1942 in Rapid. In September, they moved to Sioux Falls where Iral was a civilian communications instructor at the Airbase. Two daughters were born, Frances and Mavis. Iral was transferred to Madison, Wisconsin for six months and in 1945, the family returned to Rapid, where he was employed as a teacher with the RC school system. They resided at 2438 Canyon Lake Drive and then moved to 3822 Clifton Street in 1957. In 2008 Peggy moved to Echo Ridge in Rapid; 2013 to Aspen Grove Assisted Living in Sturgis; and then in 2014 to Sturgis Regional Seniors Care. Along with caring for her girls, Peggy worked part-time as a school census enumerator and a drivers' licensing clerk in the courthouse. In 1954 she was employed as a payroll clerk for the RC school system and in 1969 transferred to the Guidance Records Department at Stevens High School. Peggy retired as a secretary in 1978 and expanded her volunteer activities. She received several volunteer awards, such as, the 1994 National Community Service Award from AARP, and over the years was an active leader in other organizations: Tax Aide Program, Canyon Lake Senior Citizens Center, Westminster Presbyterian Church Circle, Cooperative Extension Service, SD Homemakers Council, Faculty Wives, Parent Teachers' Association, among others. Peggy enjoyed traveling and visited almost every State and Canadian Province. Even though she suffered from macular degeneration for over 25 years, she didn't slow down. Peggy loved dancing! She was thrilled when company visited the farm; the carpet was rolled back; and while her father played the accordion, they all danced. She and Iral met dancing and they waltzed and two-stepped in numerous halls throughout the Black Hills. Iral called "allemande left and do-si-do" and Peggy demonstrated the steps. Dances at the Canyon Lake and Minneluzahan Senior Centres played a major role in their senior activities. Iral died December 12, 1984. After several years, Peggy missed waltzing and found another partner, Clem Bourquin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Iral (s/o Guy Van Schoonhoven and Lydia Etta Biddle); parents (Cyril Metodej Mazachek and Agnes Marie Havel); siblings: John (Lucile Klucker), Bessie (Melvin Jacobson), George (d.y.), Agnes (Lyle Newcomb), Helen (Medford "Johnny" Johnson and Wilbur "Hack" Witte), Violet Ann (William Workman); and her special friend Clem Bourquin. Among those who survive and gratefully shared her life are her two daughters: Frances Ruebel Alberts (Mike Alberts) of Sturgis and Mavis Menzies of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada; grandchildren: Yvette Ruebel (Scott Rikli) of Ft. Collins, CO, Stephanie Alberts (Richard Weber) of Denver, CO and John Menzies (Lexi Kolosky) of Bakersfield, CA; great-grandchildren: Thomas Rikli and Bryton Douglas (Stephanie and Richard Weber); ex son-in-law Walter Menzies of Winnipeg and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be 5-7 pm on Tuesday, June 30, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home. The funeral service will be at 1:30 pm on Wednesday, July 1, at Osheim & Schmidt Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Jacobs officating. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City.
