Obituary

Peter Donald Anderson, 51, of Rapid City, died unexpectedly Saturday, June 11 while mountain biking.

He was born May 10, 1965 and grew up in Chamblee, a suburb of Atlanta to Anita and Donald Anderson. Peter attended Cross Keys High School and graduated in 1983. While in high school, Pete was captain of the soccer team and was awarded the school's honor for outstanding service. Following high school, Peter enrolled in the engineering program at Georgia Tech where he graduated with high honors and was awarded the Andrew Morrow Scholarship.

In the years following Pete's graduation, he worked for the Dow Corning Corporation out of their New Jersey office and then served in the Peace Corps, teaching science to teachers in Tonga. Following Pete's volunteer service, he enrolled in Columbia University's School of Public Affairs for the fall 1994 class. While at Columbia, Pete met and fell in love with a fellow student, Maria McCarthy. After graduation, the two were married 20 years ago in Rapid City on June 29, 1996. Pete with his family resumed his educational career in Palo Alto at the Stanford University's Business School in 2010 as a Bush Fellow.

During his career, Pete owned MAC Construction which allowed him to develop, rehabilitate and own numerous properties across Rapid City. As part of his dedication to this region, Pete served on the City Planning Commission, the Downtown Rapid City Economic Development Corporation, Arts Rapid City and the Board of Directors for the Rapid City Club for Boys. In addition, Pete was active in his Parish and was serving on the West River Diocese Building Commission at the time of his death.

Part of Pete's love for Rapid City was its proximity to the outdoors. Pete loved to hike, bike, ski and run and took every opportunity to enjoy the Black Hills with friends and family. In addition to the home he loved, Pete also loved to travel and enjoyed family trips all over the world - most recently Spain at the end of May.

Greater than his love for home and travel was Pete's love of family. This was evident to all who know the McCarthy May Anderson family. Pete was never happier than when spending time with the whole family he loved so deeply.

Survivors include his wife, Maria, his children Isabel, Ben, Stella and Eli, his mother Anita, his brothers Charlie and Paul, his parents-in-law Steve and Liz McCarthy, a large extended family and too many friends to count.

Visitation will be from 5pm to 6pm on Wednesday, June 15 at Blessed Sacrament Church followed by a Christian Wake service at 6:00pm. A Funeral Mass will be offered at Blessed Sacrament with Fr Michel Mulloy presiding, Thursday June 16, at 10:30am with lunch to follow.
